Old British Opinion Polls 2
More 1960s poll results,
Ie on nationalisation, what were the main issues, and the Common Market, capital
punishment, and immigration, and lastly some indication of who was leading the
polls in the 1950s,
This was the answer to a question
1963 1964 1965
A lot more industries should be nationalised 10 8 8
Only a few more like steel should be nationalised 14 17 17
No more industries should be nationalised, but industries that are so, should
stay so, 36 45 42
Some industries that are nationalised should be denationalised 22 18 19
No Opinion 18 12 14
In June 1969 the Cost of Living was the major issue, in early 1972 second
In June 1969 The Balance of payments was regarded as the third biggest issue
by the electorate, in mid 1970 seventh, in 1971 not in top 10 or early 1972
In June 1969 Unemployment was the 5th issue, in early 1972 the top
In June 1969 the Common Market the seventh biggest issue, in early 1972 the
5th,
In January 1963 44% of British people were for joining the Common Market EEC
and 44% against, those for included the Daily Mirror, Mail, Times, Guardian
and Telegraph, those against, the Express, and Herald,
Those in favour of joining in terms, in terms of editorials included the Mail,
those against the Herald and Express, very similar to editorial views,
In 1957 just after the EEC started a poll was carried out, 2 in 5 of those who
answered gave no opinion, but 2 to 1 of those answering said they favoured Britain
joining the EU,
In 1959 and 1960 the Tories attempted to join starting off this, it rose to
4 to 1 in favour of joining in March 1959, to in July 1960 to 3 to 1 in favour
of joining, though the no views were still high,
Most British people when presented with the issue stated they were not that
interested but when asked said they supported the entry, In 1961 2-1 Nop and
3-1 in Gallup
The reason why they supported in June 1961 was said to be, 1 in 5 of supporters
said, it is a good thing for Britain, 28% said British trade would expand, one
in 5 said shopkeepers could sell more goods and for cheaper,
Of those who opposed entry, the fear was on the effect on the Commonwealth,
Unemployment, and possible price rises,
From 1961 to 1963 opinions changed, probably based on un firm footings,
The postponement of agricultural talks helped opposition rise to above support
in 1962, but in late 1962 that stopped I am not sure from the phrasing but it
probably rose above the against, but anyway back to9 what is certain in 1963
June a Gallup poll said 46 in favour 25 against even after De GAULLE IN 1963
OPPOSED ENTRY,
By December 1966 those for joining rose to 66% those against 18%
Women those over 55, and Working class people were less in favour than the reverse
of that, sometimes those splits are meaningless,
3 in 4 of the upper class favoured entry , so there may have been a capitalist
hope to join, ironically,
The evidence states the Tories were regarded as keenest and most likely to be
able to get Britain in,
48% said the Tories were keenest in November 1966, and only 16% Labour,
After mid 1967 And Wilson's attempt to join, opposition mounted,
This was the poll result of asking do you approve of the government's aim to
join
6 Feb 1967 NOP May 1967 June 1967 July 1967 November 1967
Approve 52 37 37 38 39
Disapprove 26 41 42 38 45
Dont Know 22 22 21 24 16
Amazingly for ORC the result was 65-18 in favour to the poll If the British government were to decide that British interests would best be served by joining the EEC would you approve of joining, in Jan 1967 and 43-30 in April 1967
For Gallup may 1967 36-41 and in Dec 1967 43-30 in favour of joining and in
November 44-37
It is felt the Conservative opposition to the government was what pushed support
down, while Labour supporters were not put off by the government aiming for
this,
Some say this was stimulated by a rise against joining, or media opposition
to Labour in Tory press being strong as ever, or by the fact France so opposed
British entry, or that people felt prices would rise,
De Gaulle's resignation was greeted with the view, 2/3 of the public thought this would make EU entry more likely,
In July 1969 both Tory and Labour wanted to join though both P supporters opposed joining,
In 1970 Mid year high 50sand low 60s did not approve of joining as of fearing
price rises, while mid 20s approved of joining, this was from the change in
early 1969 when more supported joining to a small extent but aprt from then
and in 1968 most opposed entry,
In early 1972 the approval for joining drew equal not approve, then in late
1972 those disapproving entry again rose to a over few pts lead at least the
date of when entry was approved, was when support rose up to equalise in early
1972,
Other interesting polls include this, in Feb 1964 most said they opposed a Postal strike for higher wages, but when it happened most said they supported their strike,
Only 9% claimed to be harmed by a brief rail strike in 1964
30% at a December 1969 school strike,
In July 1966 3 quarters of the population, believed Harold Wilson's belief Communists were making a seaman's strike keep going, horrifically this saw most Voters support a ban on Communists holding offices in trade unions, its like something out of 1930s Italy,
By September 1970 only 14% of people felt Communist were responsible for most strikes,
In November 1967 72% of people felt illegal strikes should be banned
Only 25% of people thought strikes were an essential freedom in a democracy
in 1968
Support for Labour's new restrictions on unions fell 51 to 44 in 1968 to 1969
After the Tory Industrial relations restriction proposals support for banning illegal strikes fell to 52%,
54% people supported a secret ballot for unions 1969,
In 1961 57% though trade unions were good 25% bad, in 1964 70-12 1965 57-27
1968 66-18,
In 1968 the Gallup said most voters by a small majority liked Labour's link
to the unions,
Race Relations
1965 88% of the people supported Government plans to restrict immigration
In 1968 a poll said 37% said coloured immigrants should be allowed into Britain
first and 44% whites without British passports
79% in a late 1960s approved of immigration controls, 39% said there should
be a total ban on coloured immigration,
In April 1968 after far right Tory MPs speech 90% wanted drastic cuts in immigration,
¾ believed race violence was possible
50% in May 1968 said dependant of British coloured immigrants already here should be allowed inm, 43% opposed, then a Gallup poll said 56% opposed this,
December 1968 75% wanted no more immigration, 13% of them thought the ban should only be on coloured immigrants
In 1967 a poll said 66% thought there is allot or great deal of discrimination v immigrants
58% wanted laws making it illegal to discriminate on jobs and housing,
Only 48% said it should be illegal to say you do not want to employ as he black
44% said it should be illegal to refuse to sell or rent to coloured
46% said coloured people should not be as entitled to council houses as whites as of such
In late 60s Powell was sacked by Heath, 74% of people said they agreed with the far right MP, but many polls indicated most did not know what he believed, always a suspect accusation, by November 1968 only 18% thought Heath was wrong to have sacked the enemy
1970 a Nop poll said only 8% thought he had improved race relations,
In 1968 a poll said 19% of people said they would move away if coloured people
came to live next door,
12% would object to coloured kids in their kids class
17% to coloured work mates
In 1970 94% said what were called Paki Bashers, maybe that is people who condemn
ot attack them should be severely dealt with
In 1971 it was shown young white working class people were less racist towards in terms of separation minorities than older,
Most British people were in favour of the South African Cricket tour of Britain in the early 1970s sadly
In 1965 80% or more favoured the death penalty in Britain
These were the leads for the Tories in the early 1950s to Gallup
Highest Conservative Lead Lowest
1952 -1 -9
1953 +2 -3
1954 +1 -5
1955 +4 -3
Of the 48 by elections between 1951 to 1955 1 seat changed hands, won by the
Tories,
The political stuff of 1957 like Suez severely harmed the Tories
In March 1957 2 months after Eden's resignation Gallup showed the highest Labour
lead since 1946, at 10%,
By September it was upto 13% after the bank rate upped a bit,
So Central Office had a huge political campaign so the Tories came back into
the lead later,
It was felt the Orpington y Election of 1963 loss was as of Anger at Tory policies
In 1957 The Liberals Lost Carmarthen in a by election, so dropping them to
5% the Tories did not run v them in 2 seats, and hardly did in 2 others which
is why they had 6 before, but the win of a By Election in Torpington boosted
the party from 2.7% in 1955 up from 2.5% in 1951, to 5.9% and six seats in 1959,
At Ludlow it boosted its vote so from then in by elections started rising,
They won more by elections in 1965 and blah blah after the rise to 9 seats and
more votes in 1964,
In one period between 1967-69 the Tory lead reached 20%, but by 1970 this changed
and Labour led polls by 2pts to 9pts,
But the Tories had no real support, only anti Labour polling support, against
the devaluation crisis, a improvement in the balance of payments was what shot
Labour into the lead, as too an end to a wage freeze,
There was a last minute swing to the Tories but also slightly wrong, but not that wrong, only a few pts out for the leading parties or more, or less,
