ARMCHAIR EVENTS
My Armchair reaction to major events
September the 11th, I was at home after passing my driving test. I was watching the TUC conference,. and then saw on TV that one of the Twin Towers had been hit, and then I saw on Tv them, say another had been hit. One news man said that they would not fall, then they did, then the other did. With news about how the Pentagon had been hit. It was like something out of Ghostbusters, I thought 10,000 would have died. We thought it was bad. My twin brother said it was terrible, and was as shocked as me, he was horrified people on the bus who knew about had mentioned it just for a few seconds then went onm talking about something else, so he only really found out about it at home, we both realised the full significance of it, as a major event, and watched the TV avidly,
Tsunami We were driving up to Scotland. And we heard the news, On the way we saw lots of cars hit each other slightly on the moterway. When we arrived where we were going we saw the horrible pictures. I predicted that with a tsunami 100,000 to 300,000 would die, as of flooding. and that was about the total. It was the most horrific thing I have seen on the news.
Fall of the Berlin Wall. As I was so young it essentially passed me by. I knew it was happening, saw it on the news, but if anything it was not amazing, to me, I thought at last, after a whole few years of knowing about things a map of the world will final;ly change a bit,
Labour election 1997 I stayed up to watch it, it was very good to see a new supposedly left wing party come to power. It was very very good, in a way confidence boosting, and delightful,
Euro adoption I thought it was good, to finally be done across much of Europe,
EU expansion, A great achievement, though not much coverage of it, Though I felt proud it had happened,
Fall of Baghdad to allies, Good that a dictatorship had been ousted, but a bit of me, feared the right gloating about overthrowing a dictator. Then claiming even left wingers who opposed I suppose I was supporting the US and Britain really. Especially supported democracy, and feel the idiots whop say it is impossible fro democracy to go to the middle east as they claim it is foreign, do not care about the way all the other system there are just as foreign from monarchy of any type centralised, or constitutional monarchy to generals leading, and at least the democarcy asks the populace about stuff, so is geninly of the nation, and does not just pretend some dictator almost allways educated in foreign lands for the monarchies, is more akin to local culture, especially as these kings do not mind democarcy made luxery goods, soldiers, and such to prop up their lives and corrupt ways. They should be democarcies as that is far more local, and far more native, as all people matter not just some rich scumbags, who in the real world like for the saudis caused Al Qadea to start, and so caused the US to feel it had to invade Iraq, And look at the Saudis, they say do not investigate us for corruption, but do not make a stand against a war in Iraq, they are useless,
Collapse of USSR, Still it essentially passed me, by but as a youngster I was interested again with the rampant changes this was creationg in world maps, and world politics,
Labour defeat 1992, I was very upset
Concorde crashing, I went downstairs and said it had crashed,
Scottish and Welsh referendums accept devolution, I thought it was great, seeing the things on TV, that real countries were getting a bit of powerover themselves, and were not going to have no political position of any not anymore, in a devolved internationalist world,
Hand Over of Hong Kong, I found it interesting, and almost dramatic, theatrical,
Gore and Bush 2000 I stayed up to watch the election, deciding to support Gore, I was annoyed to have stayed up so late, and to have seen Bush be likely to win, after Gore had seemed likely to be a winner, then the next day it seemed possible Gore would win, but he never did, I watched much of it on TV, very exiting election,
Bosnian Civil War I thought it was bad they allowed the worst things to happen, and was for intervention, not seeing why they did not just act,
Nepal democracy protests, I thought it was good in the 2000s, a democarcy movement could still oust a right wing dictatorship, especially a monarchy,
Ethiopian Famine, I was far too young, I do not even know if I knew it was happening, other than the charity fun runs, and the song,
The new millenium, we watched that on TV, a huge feeling of, this should be an anti climax, as it does not really matter, as I do not want to go even more superstitious than I am already and think this date matters,
Argentinian Economic collapse, very intresting, I felt, damaged my belief that maybe privaisation and such is right after all, which I know like to believ is the case, that it is not right after all,
Congo, I thought it was bad the late 1990s war did not get much attention,
Mandela freed, Did not have a huge effect on me, other than thinking it was good, as I was too young to have been that interested in the 1980s left wing interest in it,
Scotland beating England in Wembley in the late 1990s, my favourite football result in terms of sheer delight, of one being on TV, what a result, for Scotland to have won, 1-0,
