Auroville (City of Dawn) is an "experimental" township founded in 1968 Viluppuram district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India near Puducherry in South India. "Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville is to realize human unity" runs the first public message of the founder of Auroville, Mirra Alfassa.
Auroville was founded on Wednesday 28th February,1968 by Mirra Alfassa.
In the inauguration ceremony attended by delegates of 124 nations on 28th February 1968, Alfassa gave Auroville its 4 point Charter setting forth her vision of Integral living: The Matrimandir, a golden metallic sphere in the center of town.
After the death of Alfassa in 1973, problems arose over the management of Auroville between Aurovilians and some of the initial pioneers based at Puducherry. A period of turmoil followed.
The Matrimandir
In the middle of the town is the Matrimandir. Silence is maintained inside the Matrimandir to ensure the tranquility of the space and entire area surrounding the Matrimandir is called Peace area. The Peace area in which the structure is situated is characterized by three main features: the Matrimandir itself with its twelve gardens,twelve petals and future lakes, the Amphitheater and the Banyan Tree.
There has been instead of paper and coin currency, residents have been given account numbers to connect to their central account. Visitors, however, are requested to get a temporary account.
Auroville is composed of a cluster of properties some 12km north of Pondicherry. It can be easily reached via the East Coast Road (ECR) which connects Chennai and Pondicherry. The visitor centre and Matrimandir can be reached by travelling eight kilometres westwards from the signposted turnoff at the ECR. Turning east leads directly to Auroville's private beach called Repose, several hundred metres away.
Viluppuram (also Villupuram and Vizhupuram) is one of the thirty districts which make up Tamil Nadu state situated on the southern tip of India. From the 1st to the 4th centuries CE the Chola were the rulers of the area, Karikala Chola was the most famous and powerful individual of the time. The grip of Chola rule was broken when the Cholas were overthrown by Simha Vishnu Pallava and the region came under the Pallava rule. Vijayalaya Chola again revived Chola rule. This was the beginning of great Chola Empire. Cholas regained their lost position but with the rise of Jatavarman Sundara Pandya-1 (1251), Chola supremacy came to an end. The sway of Pandyas lasted for over 50 years, followed by Muslim domination from 1334 to 1378. By 1378, the region came under the rule of Vijayanagar Kingdom and Nayaks were appointed as the rulers of the region. In 1677 Shivaji took the Gingee area with the assistance of Golkonda forces. Then came the Mughals. During the Mughal regime, both the English and French acquired settlements in South Arcot. During the Anglo-French rivalry, the entire district was turned into a battleground. After sometime, the entire area came under the control of British East India Company. It remained under British authority till 1947 when India became independent.
