Brisbane is in the southeast corner of Queensland, Australia. The city is centred around the Brisbane River, and its eastern suburbs line the shores of Moreton Bay. The greater Brisbane region is on the coastal plain east of the Great Dividing Range
The urban area is partially elevated by two large hills reaching up to 300 metres, Mount Coot-tha and Mount Gravatt in the south. Mount Petrie at 170 metres and the smaller rises of Enoggera Hill, Highgate Hill, Mount Ommaney, Stephens Mountain, Toohey Mountain and Whites Hill are dotted across the city.
The Brisbane central business district lies in a curve of the Brisbane river. It covers only 2.2 km² and is navigable on foot. Central streets are named after members of the royal family. Streets named after female members ( Adelaide, Alice, Ann, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Margaret, Mary ) run parallel to Queen Street and Queen Street Mall (named in honour of Queen Victoria) and perpendicular to streets named after male members (Albert, Edward, George, William).
Brisbane has a humid subtropical climate (Koppen climate classification Cfa) with hot, humid summers and dry, mild winters. From late Spring through to early Autumn, thunderstorms are common over the greater Brisbane area, with the more severe events accompanied by large damaging hail stones, torrential rain and destructive winds.
Brisbane's economy has white-collar and blue collar industries. White collar industries include information technology, financial services, higher education and public sector administration generally concentrated in and around the central business district and recently established office areas in the inner suburbs. Blue collar industries, including petroleum refining, stevedoring, paper milling, metalworking and QR railway workshops, tend to be located on the lower reaches of the Brisbane River and in new industrial zones on the urban fringe. Tourism is an important part of the Brisbane economy, both in its own right and as a gateway to other areas of Queensland.
Port of Brisbane is the shipping port of Brisbane, on the east coast of Australia. It is located in the lower reaches of the Brisbane River on reclaimed land that was once called Fisherman's Island at the mouth of the river. It currently is the third busiest port in Australia and the nation's fastest growing container port. It includes the main shipping channel across the Moreton Bay which extends 90 km north to Mooloolaba and is dredged to maintain a depth fourteen metres at the lowest tide.
The Story Bridge
The Story Bridge one of the oldest and most remarkable bridges in Australia is a key landmark of Brisbane. Designed by John Bradfield, the designer of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Story Bridge spans more than 250 metres across the Brisbane River. The bridge is located to the north of the CBD, boasting beautiful images of skyscrapers and the surroundings from its walkway as well as setting contrast to the city skyline itself.
Kangaroo Point
Kangaroo Point Cliffs is a popular venue especially for rock-climbers eager to climb one of the most urban rock faces in the world.
Fortitude Valley
Fortitude Valley known as "The Valley", is considered one the best red light districts in the Southern Hemisphere with a number of clubs, bars and restaurants.
Chinatown
Chinatown, a popular venue for authentic Chinese cuisine, is also located within Fortitude Valley, boasting restaurants, cafes, shopping venues, markets.
Treasury Casino
The Conrad Treasury Casino, set on the western side of the Brisbane CBD, houses a hotel, four restaurants, seven bars and a night club. The Casino is located in one of the oldest and most important buildings in Queensland, the Treasury Building built in 1889. It is an exquisite structure to see especially at twilight, through which the exterior is let up by neon lighting.
