Caerphilly (Welsh: Caerffili) is a town in the county borough of Caerphilly, south Wales, located at the bottom of the Rhymney Valley. It is a commuter town of Cardiff and Newport. It is about 2 - 3 miles north of the Cardiff suburbs of Lisvane and Rhiwbina, separated by Caerphilly Mountain. It is traditionally within the county of Glamorgan, on the border with Monmouthshire and it is the largest town in the county borough of Caerphilly, which since 2003 has formed part of the lieutenancy area of Gwent. The town gives its name to Caerphilly cheese, which originated in the area.
The town has a rugby union club, Caerphilly RFC. Caerphilly Rugby Football Club is a Welsh rugby union team founded in 1887. Their home ground is Virginia Park in Caerphilly and their nickname is The Cheesemen. During the summer, the town has hosted the The Big Cheese festival and a fundraising musical event called Megaday.
Caerphilly Castle (Welsh: Castell Caerffili) is a Norman castle that dominates the centre of the town of Caerphilly in south Wales. It is the largest castle in Wales.
Unlike many other Welsh castles, Caerphilly castle was not built by Edward I in his crack-down on the Welsh lords, but by Gilbert 'the Red' de Clare, a powerful, redheaded Norman nobleman.
