Caister on Sea Hotels
The small Norfolk seaside resort of Caister on Sea is a good place in the opinion of many to have a vacation or holiday in. Some would like to see the beaches, or the coastline, or the historic sites or the wildlife of the region.
Caister-on-Sea is a seaside resort and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is situated on the coast, some 3 miles north of Great Yarmouth.
For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of Great Yarmouth. Caister-on-Sea has been recently officially classified as a small town. It was formerly served by Caister-on-Sea railway station, which is now closed.
The name Caister-on-Sea derives from the Latin castra meaning castle, and Caister-on-Sea was the site of a Roman fort associated with the Saxon Shore. To the west of the naval base, a civilian settlement, a vicus, was established. Most of the original site now lies under modern housing. A small section, managed by English Heritage, is open to the public.
The later, mediaeval Caister Castle is actually in the adjacent parish of West Caister.
Caister-on-Sea has a King George's Field in memorial to King George V.
Norfolk is a popular tourist destination; major attractions include beaches, the Broads, and the city of Norwich. The Queen's residence of Sandringham provides an all year round tourist attraction. Rural parts of the county, notably the area around Burnham Market, are also popular locations for city dwellers to purchase weekend homes.
West Caister is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is situated just inland from the coast, some 2 km from the seaside resort of Caister-on-Sea and 4 km north of the town of Great Yarmouth.
