Chorley is a market town in Lancashire, in North West England. The town's wealth came principally from the cotton industry. As recently as the 1970s the skyline was dominated by numerous factory chimneys, but most are now demolished.
Chorley is located at the foot of the West Pennine Moors. It is the seat for the Borough of Chorley which is made up of Chorley and its surrounding villages.
Rivington Pike stands on Rivington Moor, near to Winter Hill, 363 m above sea level in Lancashire, England. Part of the Borough of Chorley, it overlooks the town of Horwich, in Greater Manchester. In times gone by, Rivington Pike was known as Rounpik (c. 1280) and Riuinpik (c. 1380), names thought to have originated from the Norse language.
The West Pennine Moors is an area of approximately 90 square miles of moorland and reservoir scenery, located in Lancashire, between the towns of Chorley, Bolton, Horwich, Ramsbottom, Haslingden, Oswaldtwistle and Darwen. Notable architectural features have included Rivington Pike, Winter Hill transmitting station, Holcombe Tower and Jubilee Tower on Darwen Moor. The moorland occurs in a number of discrete blocks at Withnell, Anglezarke and Rivington Moors; Darwen and Turton Moors; and Oswaldtwistle and Holcombe Moors. The West Pennine Moors are bisected by a number of wooded valleys and cloughs, the largest such area being in the Roddlesworth valley near Tockholes. There are some small coniferous plantations, particularly around the area's many reservoirs, but overall woodland cover is minimal.
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs parallel to Chorley and several marinas and locks are located on the Chorley area.
The main central station is Chorley railway station in the town centre.
