Clarisse Machanguana was a WNBA star who was born in Mozambique. Her early life was spent in the country during the Civil War between the Socialist Government, (that managed to win independence partly through armed revolt against Portugal's old fascist colonial dictatorship that had oppressed Portugal and it's colonies for decades) and right wing White Minority Rule South African backed guerillas (This revolt by right wingers killed a million people). Though the war affected Maputo the capital where she lived less than it affected many other areas.

She started playing basketball from the age of 6, and became skillfull with it. But just as importantly for basketball she grew into being a 6 foot 4 inches tall lady by the age of 17. She found the possiblity of being able to play basketball in modern day democratic Portugal at the age of 19, where she attended schools, and then a Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, Scout who was spying on another player saw her and decided to choose her. She then arrived in Virginia in 1994, (Just after Mozambique had achieved peace deals between the warring sides, and it became a peaceful democracy) and she majored in criminal justice, earning a grade point average of 3.7. She led this team of the Old Dominion, to a NCAA Championship in 1997. In 1997 she was then offered the chance to play for the San Jose Lasers. as a professional player, where she was measured at 6 foot 5 inches. As their first pick she averaged 10.2 pts a game. She then played for the LA Sparks, then the Charlotte Sting then the Orlando Miracles in 2002. She says she used to presume she would give back what basketball gave her, by paying for other basketball players to train, but now is more interested in helping people with HIV. She feels that she can use her quite high amount of fame in Mozambique

In 1994 a article called her exotic looking, and lauded her unfolding "endlessly long legs", and tossed about braided hair. She said she just felt she was playing basketball.

She was a good friend of Penicheiro in college, and ate and shopped with her and stayed in the same apartment.

Played with Navarra (Spanish Pro League) her 2001-02 season

In 2003 She played for Barcelona Basketball team. and in Korea.

2003-04 : played with Napoli (Italian Pro League)

In 2004 to 2005 she stopped playing basketball, to have a baby.

In 2006 she took part in the Lusophony Games, a event where nations that speak Potuguese comepete, which she speaks aswell as English. Her team won every game against Portugal, Cape Verde and Macau.

In 2006 she also played for Montpellier.

She played 118 WNBA games and scored 485 pts.
