Comedy history and info on Derby County F.C.
The
club was formed in 1884 as an offshoot (or offspin) of Derbyshire County Cricket
Club. They originally wanted to name themselves directly after the cricket club,
as Derbyshire County, but objections from a local foodball association ( they
made a cheese ball with the same name), led them to choose Derby County. To confuse
the issue further the club used to play at The Baseball Ground. To cricket or
Baseball that is the question.
They were codenamed the rams because their ground used to be a hideout for Rambo. Rambo often to used hide in the UK while on sebaticle. Rambo had a pet ram which he kept to remind the people of Derby of him.
On one occasion the ram escaped and it took 4 army regiments to catch him. In the end they let him escape, as he was too much trouble to keep. Now they employ a man dressed up as a ram. Often he is chased by female sheep.
In 1967, the now legendary Mr Cough took Derby County and led them to great occasions. He used his coughing to make himself impressive. He did not know what he was doing. But he would cough his way through the pre match motivation, then through the second half break. Everyone thought he was saying something, but he was just hiding that he had nothing to say. He not even not even know what the names of his team were. Everyone in the press had to make up what he had said. When Cough took over the team, the Rams were treading water in the Second Division and the club's only honour, the 1946 FA Cup win. There was little expectation that the young manager was going to lead his team to the club's first League Championship. Then he resigned when lost his cough and started talking, and eveyone dissagreed with him
Derby's form declined towards the end of the 70s and they went down to the Second Division in 1980. Derby found it tough because when they played anyone. The opposite team would be told this is a derby match. Now everyone decided to be up for the game and would play very tough.
Though they challenged well in their first season,
Derby's stay in the Second Division was not a joyous one and they were relegated
to the national Third Division in 1984, their centenary year and just nine years
after their last Championship.
After the relegation, the club appointed a former Newcastle United manager to stop the rot. After a two year stint in the Third Division, Cox's side were promoted to the Second Division, like a ram on the run, and won it in one attempt, returning to the old First Division in 87.
The club were being backed by wealthy newspaper baron Purdy Snodgrass. He financed the side on the back of his romantic fiction empire. But Purdy was locked up for tax evasion and the club collapsed back into the second division, like a ram on the run.
The club have since had occasion in the premier and in the championship.
