Cruises from Galveston
Many tourists may like to take a cruise from the town of Galveston. Some may wan to see the culture, history, tourist attractions, sports and society of the famous town, then cruise from the town by a boat or ocean cruiser. Some may want to hire or buy a place on an ocean liner. They may want to use a major ocean liner or a smaller one. Some may want to cruise from the city on their own boat perhaps a sailing boat or motor boat.
Galveston is a city in and seat of Galveston County located on Galveston Island on the Gulf Coast in the USA state of Texas within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area. Galveston is accessible by the Galveston Causeway linking Galveston Island to the mainland on the north end of the city, a toll bridge on the western end of the island, and by ferry boat service on the east end of the city.
Galveston is known for the hurricane that struck it in 1900. The natural disaster that followed still counts as the most deadly in American history. A 10 m long, 17-foot high seawall protects the city from floods and hurricane storm surge.
The city's tourist attractions include the Galveston Schlitterbahn waterpark, Moody Gardens botanical park, the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum, the Lone Star Flight Museum, a downtown neighborhood of historic buildings known as The Strand, many historical museums and mansions, and miles of beach front. The Strand plays host to a yearly Mardi Gras festival, Galveston Island Jazz & Blues Festival, Texas Beach Fest, Lone Star Bike Rally, and a Victorian-themed Christmas festival called Dickens on the Strand (honoring the works of novelist Charles Dickens, especially A Christmas Carol) in early December. Galveston was also home to the Balinese Room, an historic nightclub, formerly a notorious illegal gambling hall, which was located on a 600 foot pier extending into the Gulf of Mexico.
The Port of Galveston, also called Galveston Wharves, began as a trading post in 1825. Today, the port has grown to 850 acres of port facilities. The port is located on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, on the north side of Galveston Island, with some facilities on Pelican Island. The port has facilities to handle all types of cargo including containers, dry and liquid bulk, breakbulk, RO/RO, refrigerated, and project cargoes. The port of Galveston also serves as a passenger cruise ship terminal for cruise ships operating in the Caribbean. It has been or still is the had for homport for the Carnival Cruise Lines vessels the Carnival Conquest and the Carnival Ectasy. It has or still is the homeport for the Royal Caribbean International Voyager of the seas.
Some tourists may want to cruise from the famous city to other cities perhaps cities on the Caribbean or in Central and North America. Some may want to cruise to Panama, or Texas or the to east coast of the USA to such cities such as New York.
The Port of Galveston is the port of the city of Galveston, Texas. It was established by a proclamation issued by the Congress of Mexico on October 17, 1825, while the land known today as Texas was still part of Mexico. The Port of Galveston is the oldest port in the Gulf of Mexico west of New Orleans. During the late 1800s, up until the Galveston Hurricane of 1900, the port was the busiest on the Gulf Coast and considered to be second busiest in the country, next to the port of New York City. The port exported most of the nation's cotton, along with large amounts of cattle, rice and other commodities. Galveston's wealth and great esteem was due in large part to the port's activity. The port was devastated by the 1900 Storm, and though it has since recovered, its status was quickly overtaken by the Port of Houston and other deep-water ports that were able to expand without restrictions due to geographic features.
