Denver ( is the capital and the most populous city of Colorado, in the United States. Denver is a consolidated city-county located in the South Platte River Valley on the High Plains just east of the Front Range of the Southern Rocky Mountains. The Denver downtown district is located immediately east of the confluence of Cherry Creek with the South Platte River, approximately 15 miles east of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Denver is nicknamed the Mile-High City because its official elevation is exactly one mile, or 5,280 feet above sea level.
Denver is located at in the center of the Front Range Urban Corridor, between the Rocky Mountains to the west and the High Plains to the east. The City and County of Denver is surrounded by only three other counties: Adams County to the north and east, Arapahoe County to the south and east, and Jefferson County to the west.
The High Plains are a subregion of the Great Plains in the central USA, located in eastern Colorado, western Kansas, western Nebraska, central and eastern Montana, eastern New Mexico, western Oklahoma, northwestern Texas, and southeastern Wyoming. In some definitions of the subregion, parts of western South Dakota and North Dakota are included. From east to west, the High Plains rise in elevation from around 750 m to over 1800 m.
The Front Range Urban Corridor is an oblong region of urban population located along the eastern face of the Southern Rocky Mountains in the USA states of Colorado and Wyoming. The Front Range Urban Corridor stretches from Pueblo, Colorado, north along Interstate Highway 25 to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and includes the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Area, the Colorado Springs Metropolitan Area, the Boulder Metropolitan Area, the Fort Collins-Loveland Metropolitan Area, the Greeley Metropolitan Area, the Pueblo Metropolitan Area, the Cheyenne Metropolitan Area, and the Cañon City Micropolitan Area.
The High Plains are semiarid, shortgrass prairie, prickly pear cacti and scrub vegetation cover the region, with occasional buttes or other rocky outcrops. Agriculture in the forms of cattle ranching and the growing of wheat, cotton and sunflowers is the primary economic activity in the region. The aridity of the region necessitates either dryland farming methods or irrigation; much water for irrigation is drawn from the underlying Ogallala Aquifer. Some areas have significant petroleum and natural gas deposits.
Denver's economy is based partially on its geographic position and its connection to some of the major transportation systems of the country. Because Denver is the largest city within 600 miles (1,000 km), it has become a natural location for storage and distribution of goods and services to the Mountain States.
