Dorothy Ford is an American actor and model active during the 1940s through 1960s. She began her career as a model, largely due to her extreme height. In 1942, she made her screen debut in Lady in the Dark and would continue her acting career, including a role in Abbott and Costello's 1952 film, Jack and the Beanstalk, until 1966, when she put in her final (and uncredited) performance in The Wrong Box. She also appeared in a number of Broadway musicals, including Thousands Cheer in 1943 and Broadway Rhythm in 1944.
She was brought up in Santa Barbara, San Francisco, and Tucson, AZ, she was in school pageants then went into modeling after graduattion.
She first had a performing role when along side Johnny Weissmuller, then she was a showgirl for a while.
Her striking amazonic looks, brought her into a movie in 1942 in Lady in the Dark as a model. She went under contract with MGM and appeared in numerous movies, including a one where she drank with Charles Winninger.
She in 1945, began her partnership with Abbott and Costello, and got her first big acting role. In here Come the Co-Eds (1945), she performs as a towering captain of a baseball team, and apparently boldly steels every scene she is in, in a amazonic personality.
She then did a small bit of modelling in Brazil,, then went back to the US, for good film roles.
In another movie she towered over Mickey Rooney as his girlfriend, a first movie where her height was a major part of the movie plot.
She was the time in the press called a Glamazon, and said "if nature has made you tall, then be good and tall," stand tall. Among other actresses seen as tall were Maureen O'Hara at 5 foot 8 who was much shorter.
She was in 1949 in a scene where she almost became a love interest of John Wayne,
She also starred in a New York play called Big People, in the late 1940s.
Her biggest role came in 1952 along side Abbott and Costello again. Where she was athe wife of a giant in Jack and the Beanstalk, Where she was head and shoulders almost above them. And looked strong.
Costello put her in some of his scenes of his Tv show
Her career in movies slowed down, with her though getting another movie John Wayne was in 1954, as .a glamour girl.
She was in the opening sequence too of the Seven Year Itch.
She then was in lower budget movies, but did help
the James Bond movie Octopussy, behind the scenes.
