Absentee landlord
Absentee landlord is an economic term for a person who owns and rents a profit earning property, but does not live in the property's local economic region. This is a common corporate practice, and was often a common cause of resentment in the imperal era.
Critics of the practice argue absentee landlords drain local wealth, particularly in rural areas. Often causing ethnic, or racial, or national, conflict. Often they were common in imperial areas, where a company bought up territory, often by force. In the British Empire, many of the colonies had territory owned by a Absentee landlord. In Scotland, the clearances were considered to have been caused by absentee landlord demands, to move people of the land and use the land for sheep farming.
Absentee Landlords were significant issue in the History of Ireland. During the course of 16th and 17th centuries, most of the land in Ireland was confiscated from Irish Catholic landowners during Plantations of Ireland and granted to British settlers. Seized land was given to British nobles and soldiers, some of whom rented it out to Irishmen while themselves remaining residents of Britain. Over the centuries, resentment grew as not only were the absentee landlords Protestant (while most tenants were Catholic), but their existence meant wealth of the land was always exported. In the years following the Irish Potato Famine, the land issue with the Irish Land League's Land War becoming a most significant issue in Ireland.
In Israel much of the ability for the return of Jewish people to Israel was enabled by the fact that much of the land in Palestine was owned by absentee landlord people. In many cases organizations created to aid the Jewish migration to Palestine bought land from absentee landowners.
In the modern era the issue of a Absentee landlord, is important.
Often the landlord, cannot manage the land properly because they do not know, the conditions of the area, or the short term changes that may affect the land, so that changes that are required are not made.
Often an Absentee landlord is able to be be more cutting with the people of an area, that he is not a citizen of, due to a lack of feeling for the people but often because as he/she is far away from the region, he can takes measures against tenants of his land, in not having immediate fear of retribution, or public scrutiny.
In New York a law known as the ABSENTEE LANDLORD PROPERTY TAX SURCHARGE, was introduced a few years ago, for each property owner, who do not reside in the property and use the property exclusively to generate income. This showed that often an absentee landlord could be used as useful tax source as the government does not have to worry about votes from a foreign owner. Yet often a foreign owner might be wealthy and finance support for another party if he is taxed to highly. Often Developed nations are perusaded by wealthy nations or companies too charge lower taxes for companies that buy up their land, with the threat they will move their business to other places.
