Project Architect

Specific tasks of a project architect are usually associated with architectural design, construction materials and methods and production of construction documents (floor plans, elevations, etc.). Other responsibilities range from client relations to zoning and building code management, material specification and quality control by checking and making revisions to shop drawings. The project architect usually works in concert with a Project Manager (PM) who is responsible for the budget and the whole architectural design team including all consultants (engineers, cost estimators, interior designers, landscape architects).

The project architect can also do the task in a small studio, but typically, the project architect is only responsible for design management of a building project, assisted by interns and other staff. The project architect does not have to be a registered architect, and does not often sign contracts, construction documents or payment applications, legally signed and sealed by the owner or a partner of the architectural office. This liability is covered by the firm, and legal responsibility for any architectural design errors and omissions ultimately falls on the owner or partner in an architectural firm who signs documents.

An architectural engineer applies skills of many engineering disciplines to design, construction, operation, maintenance, and renovation of buildings while paying attention to impacts on the surrounding environment. In nations such as Canada, the UK and Australia, architectural engineering is more commonly known as Building engineering, building systems engineering, or building services engineering. In some languages, such as Korean, architect is literally translated as "architectural engineer".

Intern architect - Some states prohibit the use of the word architect from any person not already licensed to practice Architecture. In this case the candidate may be referred to based on the title of their duties, such as "Project Manager". The term "Intern" is seldom used, as it generally is used to describe a student who while still at University is working in an Architect's office for practical experience.
