Crown green bowls

Crown green bowls" is a variant of lawn bowls played in northern England, and some other regions of the UK

Bowls is a precision sport in which the goal is to roll slightly radially asymmetrical balls (called bowls) closer to a smaller white ball (jack or kitty) than one's opponent is able to do. It is related to bocce and pétanque. This game is most popular in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and in other Commonwealth nations.

Game described with differences from Crown green and flat green

Crown Green

Each player has one set of 3 uniquely marked bowls called "woods". Each bowl has weight bias on one side so that the player can role the bowl toward the target on a curved path towards the target.

Once the first wood is bowled, the other players take turns to roll bowls towards the jack. Woods are not always played with an aim of being closest to the jack, they're played to knock opposing woods off contention or to move a jack or other woods to advantageous position. The winner of the leg scores a point for each wood closer to the jack than an opposing team's wood. The player or team that first reaches 21 points wins.

The main difference is the Green
In Crown Green there is no specifed shape, but it is usually rectangular with sides of 40 yards, rising to a crown near the centre of the green, being on average between 9 inches and 15 inches above edge of green. The playing area of a green is bordered by a channel or trench with no specified dimensions.

This compares to Flat Green of a Rectangular with sides not less than 37 metres or more than 40 metres, intended to a level a playing surface as is possible. The surrounding ditch or trench to be a minimum width of 200 mm maximum 380 millimetres; and a minimum depth of 50 mm, maximum 200 millimetres. The bank behind the ditch to be a minimum of 230 mm above the green.

Crown Green Footer equivalent of the Flat Green Mat
The footer is circular with a diameter of not less than 128 mm, and no more than 154 mm. A player about to play the Jack or a bowl must have a foot on the footer and bowl with the same sided hand.

Dead Ends
Crown Green
A new end is started with the footer placed at the position where the jack lay in the dead end. In the case where a jack has been driven into the ditch, the footer is placed one metre from the edge of the green where the jack actually left the green. In Flat Green a new end is played in the same direction as the dead end, unless both sides agree to do another direction.

Many a player takes great pride in the bowl they use in Crown Green Bowls, and often spends, many a penny on their game accessories, just as in golf and ten pin bowling.

It is common for the club to be surrounded by a hedge.

The Jack and The Bowls have different weight and size to those in flat green.
