Steel fixer
AKA ironworkers or rod busters
A steel fixer is a tradesman / worker who positions
and secures steel reinforcing bars, also known as rebar and steel mesh used in
reinforced concrete on construction projects. The work involves following engineering
drawings to detail, the type of bar and the spacing used, and setting out the
work. The reinforcing bars are tied together with wire. Steel fixers are also
responsible for attaching spacers and chairs that determine the amount of concrete
cover. In the US, people doing this job are often referred to as ironworkers or
rod busters.
Rebar, a portmanteau for reinforcing bar, is common steel bar, an important component of reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry structures. It is usually formed from carbon steel, and is given ridges for better frictional adhesion to the concrete. Concrete is a material very strong in compression, but virtually without strength in tension. To compensate for this imbalance in concrete's behavior, rebar is cast into it to carry the tensile loads. Concrete cover is the region between exposed concrete surface and the nearest surface of the reinforcing bar, in reinforced concrete members.
