Why are there more dormer structures in Scotland, than in other areas of the UK?

A structural element of a building which protrudes from a sloping roof surface.

Dormers are used, in original construction or as additions, to create usable space in a roof of a building by adding headroom and usually also enabling additions of windows.

Often conflated with the term dormer, a dormer window is a window set in the dormer. Like skylights, dormer windows are a source of light and ventilation for top floors, but unlike skylights increase the amount of headroom in a room and allow for more usable space.

Types of dormer are:

Gable fronted dormer the front of the dormer rises to a point at the ridge of the dormer roof. Also known as a dog-house dormer.
Hipped roof dormer= the roof slopes back from front of structure to a point farther back.
Flat roof dormer= the roof of the dormer is flat.
Shed dormer= Often used in gable roofed homes, a shed dormer has a single planed roof, pitched at a shallower angle than the main roof.

If you look across the UK, it does seem more of the houses in the northern nation have a dormer, than those in the south.

Except with houses from the 16th century designs.

Why is this? Is it to cut the costs, of building an extra floor?

Is it because of culture?

Is planning permission more difficult. Some find these unsightly.

Is it because of a different way of doing the roof, that leaves more capability for a roof, than those in the south?

Is it because of climatic differences? Does higher rainfall lead to a requirement for a higher roof, to remove rainfall quicker of the roof. Leading to a higher steeper roof, and therefore more room for a floor in the roof.

The origin of dormers is claimed to be from French architect Francois Mansart. Known for the "Mansard style", known for its four-sided, double pitched roof with lower slope especially steep. The high roof line enabled the construction of an extra floor in the roof area. It is derived from the French word dormir, which means sleep.

Is it because of snow? In Scotland snow fall is higher the snow can drop of the roof, if the roof is steeper. Are houses in mountaineous areas of the UK found with this.
