Fiji consists of 322 islands (of which 106 are inhabited) and 522 smaller islets. The two most important islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. The islands are mountainous, with peaks up to 1,300 metres, and covered with tropical forests. Both islands are mountainous, with peaks up to 1300 m rising abruptly from the shore, and covered with tropical forests. Heavy rains (up to 304 cm or 120 in annually) fall on the windward (southeastern) side, covering these sections of the islands with dense tropical forest. Lowlands on the western portions of each of the main islands are sheltered by the mountains and have a well marked dry season favorable to crops such as sugarcane. Viti Levu hosts the capital city of Suva, and is home to nearly three quarters of the population. Other important towns include Nadi ( the location of the international airport ), and the second city Lautoka (the location of a large sugar mill and a sea port). The main towns on Vanua Levu are Labasa and Savusavu. Other islands and island groups include Taveuni and Kadavu (the third and fourth largest islands respectively), the Mamanuca Group (just outside Nadi) and Yasawa Group, which are popular tourist destinations, the Lomaiviti Group, outside of Suva, and the remote Lau Group. Rotuma, some 500 kilometres north of the archipelago, has a special administrative status in Fiji. Fiji's nearest neighbour is Tonga. The climate in Fiji is tropical and warm most of the year round.
Fiji's culture is a rich mosaic of indigenous, Indian, Chinese and European traditions, comprising social polity, language, food, costume, belief systems, architecture, arts, craft, music, dance and sports. Fiji's arts and crafts reflect local adaptations of their Polynesian and Melanesian heritage.
Music of Old Fiji consisted of various chants which often told a story or preserved information to be passed on from generation to generation, these songs used various traditional instruments.
With the introduction of European and Asian cultures Music in Fiji has evolved and songs sung in the Fijian vernacular are popular but so also are songs in Indian and English, some local artist mix all three languages and traditional instruments from each culture making for a very interesting Musical experience.
More
than half of Fiji's population lives on the island coasts, either in Suva or in
smaller urban centers. The interior is sparsely populated because of its rough
terrain.
Major airports include:
Nadi International Airport
Nausori International Airport
Viti
Levu is the largest island in the Republic of Fiji, the site of the nation's capital,
Suva, and home to a large majority of Fiji's population. Viti Levu hosts the capital
city of Suva, and is home to nearly three quarters of the population of the Republic
(about 580,000). Other important towns, all around the coast, include Ba, Lautoka,
Nadi, Nausori, Rakiraki, and Sigatoka. One major road has been built around the
perimeter of Viti Levu.
Rugby
union is very popular in Fiji. The highest level of competition is the Colonial
Cup. The national team also competes in international tournaments. The Fijian
Rugby Sevens team is constantly one of the top two or three teams in the world,
often the premier team.
