Melbourne is the more common name for the geographic region and statistical division of the Greater Melbournemetropolitan area. Melbourne is located in the south-eastern part of mainland Australia, within the state of Victoria. Geologically, it is built on the confluence of Quaternary lava flows to the west, Silurian mudstones to the east, and Holocene sand accumulation to the southeast along Port Phillip.
Melbourne extends along the Yarra through the Yarra Valley toward the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Ranges to the east. It extends northward through the undulating bushland valleys of the Yarra's tributaries - Moonee Ponds Creek (toward Tullamarine Airport), Merri Creek and Plenty River to the outer suburban growth corridors of Craigieburn and Whittlesea. The city sprawls south-east through Dandenong to the growth corridor of Pakenham, Victoria towards West Gippsland.
Melbourne Airport also known as Tullamarine Airport, is the primary airport serving the city of Melbourne and the second busiest airport in Australia. Located 23 kilometres (14 mi) from the city centre, adjacent to the suburb of Tullamarine, it was opened in 1970 to replace the nearby Essendon Airport.
Main airports
The following four airports offer are the four airports that offer regularly scheduled passenger flights.
Melbourne Airport is located to the north-west of the city and is by far the busiest
airport serving the city with domestic flights to every state and territory of
Australia, Africa, Europe, Asia, Oceania and North America. The airport is a major
hub for both Qantas and Virgin Blue, and home base for Jetstar Airways and Tiger
Airways Australia, and cargo airlines Australian air Express and Toll Priority.
Avalon Airport is located to the south-west outside the city of Geelong and is
the next most prominent airport with Jetstar Airways and Sharp Airlines serving
the airport. The airport is intending on offering international flights in the
near future.
Essendon Airport is located in the middle north-west of the
city and was formerly the primary airport for the city. It is now limited to a
handful of passenger airlines and is primarily is used for general aviation and
cargo flights.
Moorabbin Airport is located in the middle southern suburbs
offers a limited number of passenger flights but is the primary general aviation
airport in the city.
Perth Airport is an Australian domestic and international airport located south of Guildford, Western Australia, and is the major commercial airport servicing Western Australia's capital city, Perth. Prior to the opening of the Perth Airport, civilian air services for the city were provided from airfields located in Maylands (in operation since 1924), as well as on the city's foreshore at Langley Park. By the end of the 1930s, it became clear that the Maylands Aerodrome was limited in the size and speed of aircraft it was able to handle thus causing them to seek an alternative site for a future airport. The central business district of Perth is bounded by the Swan River to the south and east, with Kings Park on the western end, while the railway lines form a northern border. St Georges Terrace
Sydney Airport (also known as Kingsford Smith International Airport) is located in the Sydney suburb of Mascot. It is the major airport serving Sydney. Originally declared an aerodrome in 1920 (then known as Sydney Airport), it was renamed Sydney (Kingsford Smith) International Airport in 1953, in honour of Charles Kingsford Smith, a pioneering Australian aviator. The airport's first runways were built in 1933, all in gravel. Some small streams where some of the present runways are located were also filled. By the 1960s the need for a new international terminal had become apparent, and work commenced in late 1966.
Brisbane
Airport is a passenger airport serving Brisbane and the third busiest in Australia,
after Sydney and Melbourne airports. Located in the suburb with the same name,
the airport serves the city of Brisbane and the surrounding metropolitan area.
Due to its flat surface, Eagle Farm, originally a farming area, was announced
as an aerodrome in 1925. Although Qantas started operations there in 1926, most
of the flights in Brisbane operated at the Archerfield Airport, which contained
a superior landing surface. Brisbane ( is the state capital of Queensland and
its most populous city. It is also the third most populous city in Australia,
behind southern rivals Sydney and Melbourne. The city is situated on the Brisbane
River on a low-lying floodplain between Moreton Bay and the Great Dividing Range
in south-eastern Queensland. The local indigenous people knew the area as Mian-jin,
meaning 'place shaped as a spike'. The city is named after Sir Thomas Brisbane,
the Governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825. Brisbane's demonym is a Brisbanite.
