Florida is a state located in the southeastern region of the United States, bordering Alabama to the northwest and Georgia to the northeast. Much of the land mass of the state is a large peninsula with the Gulf of Mexico to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Most of Florida has a humid subtropical climate; southern Florida has a tropical climate.
The Big Bend of Florida, USA., is an informal region of the state with no official surveyed boundary. Geologists prefer to characterize Floridas Big Bend as the drowned karst section of the coast that occurs between the Apalachicola Cuspate Delta and Southwest Floridas Central Barrier Coast. Perhaps the most culturally relevant definition of the Big Bend region is the section of west peninsular Floridas coast without barrier islands-- the section from North Anclote Key (or the Anclote River) to Ocklocknee Bay, near Alligator Point. The straight line distance between these two geographic features is about 150 miles apart. Generally following the arc of the coast offshore, it is more like 200 miles.
Central Florida is the central region of the United States state of Florida, on the East Coast. The region enjoys a hot but stormy climate, with many thunderstorms, and hurricanes threatening often.
Although the exact area can be disputed, Central Florida tends to be thought of as the area including Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake, Brevard, and Volusia counties. Polk, Flagler, and Sumter counties are considered by some, including the local media, to be part of Central Florida.
The Emerald Coast is an area in the US state of Florida on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, roughly bounded by Pensacola, Florida on the west and Port St. Joe, Florida on the east. Popular vacation destinations include Pensacola Beach, Gulf Breeze, Navarre Beach, Fort Walton Beach, WaterColor, Panama City Beach, Destin, and Seaside.
The First Coast is a region of Florida, in the United States. It extends along the Atlantic, or eastern, coast of the state, from the Georgia border, past the southern end of Anastasia Island, to Marineland. The name First Coast is an intentional double entendre; it not only signifies that the oldest permanent European settlement (St. Augustine) lies within its boundaries, but also that it is the "first coast" of Florida that a voyager would encounter while traveling along the eastern seaboard of the United States.
The Florida Heartland is a region of Florida located to the north and west of Lake Okeechobee, composed of six inland, non-metropolitan counties DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, and Okeechobee.
The Florida Keys are an archipelago of about 1700 islands in the southeast United States. They begin at the southeastern tip of the Florida peninsula, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. The islands lie along the Florida Straits, dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the west, and defining one edge of Florida Bay. At the nearest point, the southern tip of Key West is just 94 miles from Cuba.
The Florida Panhandle is the region of the state of Florida which includes the westernmost 16 counties in the state. It is a narrow strip lying between Alabama and Georgia to the north and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. Culturally and in terms of history and climate, like the First Coast region, the region is more closely tied to the Deep South than to the east coast peninsular Florida.
Florida's Forgotten Coast is the name commonly used to refer to a quiet section of coastline stretching from Mexico Beach to St. Marks in the USA state of Florida, including the areas of Port St. Joe, Cape San Blas, Indian Pass, Apalachicola, St. George Island, Eastpoint, and Lanark Village. The Forgotten Coast got its name in the early nineties when a Florida tourism group "forgot" to include information on this area on their map. This prompted a local group to create their own brochure and map and call this area the Forgotten Coast.
The Gold Coast is the region of the southeastern coast of the U.S. state of Florida between Palm Beach and Miami. The region consists of the long urban cluster that runs along the eastern shores of Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade County; also called the South Florida metropolitan area. It includes the cities of West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Pompano Beach and Hollywood, as well as the famous beach chic Fort Lauderdale.
