Florida is a state located in the southeastern region of the United States, bordering Alabama to the northwest and Georgia to the northeast. Much of the land mass of the state is a large peninsula with the Gulf of Mexico to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Most of Florida has a humid subtropical climate; southern Florida has a tropical climate.
Much of the state of Florida is situated on a peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Straits of Florida. It extends to the northwest into a panhandle, extending along the northern Gulf of Mexico. It is bordered on the north by the states of Georgia and Alabama, and on the west, at the end of the panhandle, by Alabama.
The climate of Florida is tempered somewhat by its proximity to water. The state has a humid subtropical climate, except for the southern part below Lake Okeechobee, which has a true tropical climate. Cold fronts can occasionally bring high winds and cool to cold temperatures to the entire state during late fall and winter. The Florida Keys, surrounded by water, have a tropical climate with lesser variability in temperatures. Snow in Florida is a rare occurrence.
The state line begins in the Atlantic Ocean, traveling west, south, and north up the thalweg of the Saint Mary's River. At the origin of that river, it then follows a straight line nearly due west and slightly north, to the point where the confluence of the Flint River ( from Georgia ) and the Chattahoochee River ( down the Alabama / Georgia line ) used to form Florida's Apalachicola River. ( Since Woodruff Dam was built, this point has been under Lake Seminole. ) The border with Georgia continues north through the lake for a short distance up the former thalweg of the Chattahoochee, then with Alabama runs due west along latitude 31°N to the Perdido River, then south along its thalweg to the Gulf via Perdido Bay. Much of the state is at or near sea level.
The Florida Panhandle is the region of the state of Florida which includes the westernmost 16 counties in the state. It is a narrow strip lying between Alabama and Georgia to the north and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. Culturally and in terms of history and climate, like the First Coast region, the region is more closely tied to the Deep South than to the east coast peninsular Florida.
The Tampa Bay Area, also known as The Bay Area (in contrast to the San Francisco Bay Area), or simply Tampa Bay after the body of water it surrounds, is the second most populated metropolitan region in the state of Florida, the 19th largest metro area in the United States, and the 6th largest in the South behind only Dallas, Houston, Miami, Washington DC, and Atlanta.
The Treasure Coast is a term for a region in the US state of Florida stretching from Hobe Sound in the south through Sebastian in the north, including the coastal counties of Indian River, St. Lucie, and Martin. The inland county of Okeechobee is sometimes considered a part of the Treasure Coast, although it is included in the Florida Heartland. Okeechobee is included with the three coastal counties in the Indian River Community College district and in the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit. The Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council based in Stuart, which has jurisdiction over the counties of Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin does not include Okeechobee but does include Palm Beach, which is usually considered part of Gold Coast, Florida
Although the exact area can be disputed, Central Florida tends to be thought of as the area including Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake, Brevard, and Volusia counties. Polk, Flagler, and Sumter counties are considered by some, including the local media, to be part of Central Florida. Although geographically in the central part of the state, usually the west central coast, including Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, and Hernando counties, is considered the Tampa Bay area or the Suncoast, rather than a part of Central Florida. This area is known as the I-4 corridor.
Shortly after the Civil War, residents of Florida's peninsula considered ceding the state's entire western arm to Alabama for a million dollars. Alabama's leaders decided that the land was "a sand bank and gopher region," and, as a result, the Panhandle remained a part of Florida. The region is a major source of revenue for the state today.
