The Emigrants ( film)
The Emigrants (Utvandrarna) is a 1971 film directed by Jan Troell. It tells the story of a Swedish group who emigrate från Småland, Sweden to Minnesota, US in the 19th century. The film follows the hardship of the group in Sweden and on the trip.
The movie is based on the first two novels of the The Emigrants suite by Vilhelm Moberg: The Emigrants and Unto a Good Land.
It was adapted to the screen by Bengt Forslund
and Jan Troell.

The
Emigrants was followed by a 1972 sequel, "The New Land" ("Nybyggarna"),
with the same cast.
Daniel Lindstrom left Sweden in 1853 in search of a place to find a nice piece of land to settle in America. Lindstrom was incorporated 41 years later, in 1894. There were many other Swedish Emigrants who traveled with Daniel including Erik Norelius, whose personal journals documented in part, formed the basis of Vilhelm Moberg’s novels of the Swedish emigration to the United States, The Emigrants.
The best-known artistic representation
of the Swedish mass migration is the epic four-novel suite The Emigrants (1949–59)
by Vilhelm Moberg (1898–1973). Portraying the lives of an emigrant family
through several generations, the novels have sold nearly two million copies in
Sweden and have been translated into more than twenty languages.[51] The tetralogy
has been filmed by Jan Troell as The Emigrants (1971) and The New Land (1972),
and forms the basis of Kristina from Duvemåla, a 1995 musical by former
ABBA-members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. An artistic representation,
though more aimed at children is the "Kristen" series of books and doll
from the Amercian Girl Collection.
