Dolgarog is is situated a few km north of Llanrwst on the west side of the Conwy river.

In Roman times the major settlement near to Dolgarog was Caer hun a Roman fort. This was the main crossing point for Romans across the River Conwy. This took the Romans from Chester to Caernarfon. From Roman times until 1826 the Tal Y Cafn / Dolgarog area was key as a transport route from Angelsey and then Ireland across the north of Cymru.

The history of the Tal-y-cafn, Dolgarog area during Medieval times is well researched and is disscussed in a website listed below. In Medieval times the area of the Tal y Cafn was a maerdref called Cafn Gronant of the Arllechwedd Isaf commote. This commote stretched from the Conwy estuary, to Dolgarog. A ferry catered for those who seeked to cross the river. at Tal Y Cafn duing medieval times from the 14th century.

During medieval times, the Welsh were banned from holding markets within 10 km of the major English built castle structures. This allowed Llanrwst to develop as town and as a crossing point over Tal Y Cafn. Some.

In 1826 when a bridge was finally built over the conwy river estuary. This caused a decline in the popularity of the river crossing. Then in 1897 a bridge was built at Tal - Y Cafn ending the need for a ferry.

The first Aluminium works in Dolgarog was developed from plans in 1907. But in 1909 liquidation forced the company out of existence and a new company was formed.

As transport was difficult a russian whaling ship was used to transport metal from Dolgarog. A railway was constructed from Dolgarog to the river but this was closed down in the sixties.

Sheets of half-hard aluminium with a 1.25% manganese content were produced at the Dolgarog aluminium works during WW II.
