Southwold is a seaside town in the Waveney district of Suffolk, East Anglia, England, at the mouth of the River Blyth within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB. Although Council Tax is paid to Waveney District Council, the town is in the Suffolk Coastal parliamentary constituency.
The beach is a combination of sand and shingle.
Southwold Harbour lies south of the town on the River Blyth. It extends from the river mouth to nearly a mile upstream and serves mainly fishing and small pleasure boats. Some huts sell freshly caught and other fish, and at the upstream end of the harbour, at Blackshore, is the public house The Harbour Inn.
Situated at the seaward end of the harbour are the RNLI Lifeboat Shed, and the Alfred Corry Museum. Housed in the former Cromer lifeboat shed, the latter is home to the former Southwold lifeboat Alfred Corry, which was in service from 1893 to 1918. The boat is currently being restored to her original state.
Southwold
Lighthouse is a lighthouse in Southwold, Suffolk, England. It was constructed
by Trinity House from 1887 and was taken into service in 1890. It replaced three
lighthouses which had been condemned due to serious coastal erosion. The lights
it houses are white when seen from directly out to sea (for navigation) and red
from the sides (as a warning).
Southwold Model Yacht Regattas (SMYR) is model
yacht racing club based in the town of Southwold, Suffolk, UK.
SMYR was formed in 1894 and the Southwold Regatta has been held every year (except war years) since. The event is open to all, but radio-controlled boats are prohibited. There are various types of competitions testing both speed and accuracy with handicaps for more skilled sailors. Some of the boats entered are up to 80 years old and include replicas of the old Beach Yawls. The model yacht pond used for the regattas is located at North Beach is managed by the Club with members carrying out much of the maintenance (with some assistance and financial support from Waveney District Council).
Suffolk is a non-metropolitan county of historic origin in East Anglia, England. It has borders with Norfolk to the north, Cambridgeshire to the west and Essex to the south. The North Sea lies to the east. The county town is Ipswich, at and other important towns include Lowestoft and Bury St Edmunds.
