Hotels in the Dutch city of Maastricht are often required for tourists who require short term accommodation in the famous Dutch city. Some tourists may want to see the culture, history, sports and architecture of the famous city. Some may want to stay at a luxury hotel or cheap hotel. Some may want to stay at a high status hotel.
Maastricht is a city and a municipality in the Dutch province of Limburg, of which it is the capital. The city is situated on both sides of the Meuse river (Dutch: Maas) in the south-eastern part of the Netherlands, near the Belgian and German borders. Maastricht has nearly 120,000 inhabitants. Its name is derived from Latin Trajectum ad Mosam or Mosae Trajectum, meaning "Mosa-crossing", and refers to the bridge over the Meuse river built by the Romans during the reign of Augustus Caesar.
There is some discussion as to whether Maastricht is the oldest city of the Netherlands: Nijmegen is currently considered the oldest city mainly as it was the first settlement to receive Roman city rights. Maastricht as a settlement is at least 500 years older but never received Roman city rights.
Nowadays, Maastricht is widely known as a centre of tradition, history and culture, and popular with tourists for shopping and recreation. Due to Maastricht University, the Maastricht School of Management and parts of Zuyd University (including the Maastricht Conservatory, the Academy of Dramatic Arts and Hotel School), Maastricht also houses many students from home and abroad.
The Maastricht Treaty (formally, the Treaty on European Union, TEU) was signed on 7 February 1992 in Maastricht, the Netherlands after final negotiations on December 9, 1991 between the members of the European Community and entered into force on 1 November 1993 during the Delors Commission. It created the European Union and led to the creation of the euro. The Maastricht Treaty has been amended to a degree by later treaties.
MVV (Maastrichtse Voetbal Vereniging) is a Dutch professional football club from the city of Maastricht, founded on April 2, 1902. Because their logo is based on the city's coat of arms, an armed angel holding a red shield with a white star, they are nicknamed "de Sterrendragers" ("Wearers of Stars") and, in local dialect, "Us MVV'ke" ("our little MVV").
