LaVale is located in the shadow of Haystack Mountain. To the east is Cumberland and the very scenic Narrows. To the west is Piney Mountain and Frostburg. LaVale is on the Old National Pike. LaVale is a business center that contains the largest concentration of retail and the only indoor shopping mall, Country Club Mall, in Cumberland Metro.

Allegany County is a county located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Maryland. It is part of the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Its county seat is Cumberland. The name Allegany comes from a local Native American word, oolikhanna, which means "beautiful stream." Evitts Mountain is a stratigraphic ridge in the Ridge and Valley region of the Appalachian Mountains, located in Bedford County, Pennsylvania and Allegany County, Maryland. The ridge line runs north from Rocky Gap State Park in Maryland, across the Mason-Dixon Line into Pennsylvania and then to the west Martin Hill, passing very near Tussey Mountain in Snake Spring Valley. The ridge then turns west, wrapping around north of Bedford, Pennsylvania to its intersection with Dunning Mountain, dividing Dunning Cove from Morrison Cove. The Raystown Branch Juniata River passes through "The Narrows", a prominent water gap along with the Pennsylvania Turnpike and the now dismantled Bedford and Bridgeport Railroad near Bedford, Pennsylvania. Evitts Creek runs through the base of the Mountain in Rocky Gap State Park.

Dans Mountain is located in Allegany County, Maryland, USA between Georges Creek and the North Branch Potomac River. The mountain is part of the Allegheny Front. The highest point on Dans Mountain is called Dan's Rock which has an elevation of 2,898 feet (883 m) above sea level. The mountain rises 2,200 feet above the town of LaVale. Although there are higher points in Maryland, Dans Mountain has the most impressive escarpment of Maryland's mountains.

The Cumberland Metropolian Area is geographically isolated by a range of ridges and valleys from the rest of Maryland which is relatively flat. These mountain ranges form adjacent valleys which have served to collect and integrate the regional cities and towns together into urbanized channels that follow the valleys northeasterly. This has served to give the area a unique sense of identity and economic integration.
