Malaysia is a federation that consists of thirteen states and three federal territories in Southeast Asia. The capital city is Kuala Lumpur, while Putrajaya is the seat of the federal government. The country is separated into two regionsPeninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneoby the South China Sea. Malaysia borders Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and the Philippines. The country is located near the equator and experiences a tropical climate. Malaysia's head of state is the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (conventionally referred to as 'the King' or 'the Agong') and the government is headed by a Prime Minister. The government is closely modeled after the Westminster Parliamentary System.
Malaysia as a unified state did not exist until 1963. Previously, a set of colonies were established by the United Kingdom from the late-18th century, and the western half of modern Malaysia was composed of several separate kingdoms. This group of colonies was known as British Malaya until its dissolution in 1946, when it was reorganised as the Malayan Union. Due to widespread opposition, it was reorganised again as the Federation of Malaya in 1948 and later gained independence on 31 August 1957. Singapore, Sarawak, British North Borneo and the Federation of Malaya joined to form Malaysia on 16 September 1963. However, less than two years later Singapore seceded from the federation and became an independent republic on 9 August 1965. The early years of the new union were marred by an armed conflict with Indonesia and the expulsion of Singapore. The Southeast Asian nation experienced an economic boom and underwent rapid development during the late-20th century. At one time, it was the largest producer of tin, rubber and palm oil in the world. Manufacturing has a large influence in the country's economy.
The Malays form the majority of the population. Some Malays are of Arab descent and there are sizable Chinese and Indian communities. (In Malaysia there is 3 main races, Malays, Chinese and Indians. Malays can trace their ancestors to Indonesians and arabians.) Islam is the largest as well as the official religion of the federation. The Malay language is the official language. The Malay language was originally written in Pallava from India, the earliest known inscriptions in Malay were found in southern Sumatra and on the island of Bangka and date from 6836 AD. They were written in an Indian script during the time of the kingdom of Srivijaya, but nowadays, the Roman alphabet (Rumi) is more often used.
The two distinct parts of Malaysia,
separated from each other by the South China Sea, share a largely similar landscape
in that both West and East Malaysia feature coastal plains rising to often densely
forested hills and mountains, the highest of which is Mount Kinabalu at 4,095.2
metres on the island of Borneo. The local climate is equatorial and characterised
by the annual southwest (April to October) and northeast (October to February)
monsoons.
Kota Kinabalu, capital of East Malaysian state of Sabah is located
1600 km east across the South China Sea from Kuala Lumpur
Tanjung Piai, located in the southern state of Johor, is the southernmost tip of continental Asia.
The Strait of Malacca, lying between Sumatra and peninsular Malaysia, is arguably the most important shipping lane in the world.
Putrajaya is the newly created administrative capital for the federal government of Malaysia, aimed in part to ease growing congestion within Malaysia's capital city, Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur remains the seat of parliament, as well as the commercial and financial capital of the country. Other major cities include George Town, Ipoh, Johor Bahru, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Miri, Alor Star, Malacca Town, and Petaling Jaya.
The Strait of Malacca is a narrow, 805 km stretch of water between Peninsular Malaysia (West Malaysia) and the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It is named after the state of Melaka, Malaysia.
Peninsular Malaysia (Malay: Semenanjung Malaysia), also known as Malaya or West Malaysia, is the part of Malaysia which lies on the Malay Peninsula, and shares a land border with Thailand in the north. To the south is the island of Singapore. Its area is 50,810 square miles. It accounts for the majority of Malaysia's population and economy. Across the Strait of Malacca to the west lies the island of Sumatra. East Malaysia (on the island of Borneo) is to the east across the South China Sea.
East Coast and West Coast
The word(s) East Coast is particularly used in Malaysia to describe either one of the following states in Peninsular Malaysia facing the South China Sea:
Kelantan
Pahang
Terengganu
It is not uncommon to describe Pahang as a state in the East Coast, as, geographically, most of Pahang is located on the eastern side of Peninsular Malaysia, and only part of it is located towards the central portion of Peninsular Malaysia.
The term West Coast refers informally to a collection of states in Peninsular Malaysia situated towards the western coast generally facing the Strait of Malacca, as opposed to the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Unlike the East Coast, the West Coast is partitioned further into three regions (as seen in #States and territories), including:
The Northern Region: Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak.
The Central Region:
Selangor and the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.
The Southern
Region: Negeri Sembilan, Malacca and Johor.
West and East Malaysia
The distinction between West and East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) is significant beyond the sphere of geography, because as well as having a different court structure, the eastern states have more autonomy than the original States of Malaya, for example, maintaining restrictions on immigration from the peninsula.
