Travelers going to Kodaikanal starting their journey at Ammaianayakkanur village traveled 50 kilometers in 12 to 14 hours by bullock cart up to Krishnamma Nayak Thope. From there, the 18 kilometers journey to Kodaikanal was undertaken with conveyance by foot, horses, or Palanquins with sufficient hired "coolies". In 1854, an improved 16 kilometers bridle path was built from Krishnamma Nayak Thope. In 1875, the Indian railways extended its line from Chennai to Tirunelveli and a train station named Kodai Road was built near Ammaianayakkanur village, to facilitate visits to Kodaikanal.
The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory is an solar observatory owned and operated by Indian Institute of Astrophysics. It is located on the southern tip of the Palni Hills 4 km from Kodaikanal town, Dindigul district, Tamilnadu state, South India. The Evershed effect was first detected at this observatory in January 1909. Solar data collected by the lab is the oldest continuous series of its kind in India. Precise observations of the equatorial electrojet are made here due to the unique geographic location of Kodaikanal. The Evershed effect, named after the Britist astronomer John Evershed, is the radial flow of gas across the photospheric surface of the penumbra of sunspots from the inner border with the umbra towards the outer edge.
