Llanelli ( the largest town in the county of Carmarthenshire, in south west Wales, sits on the Loughor estuary on the West Wales coast, approximately 10 miles west north west of Swansea and 12 miles south east of the county town, Carmarthen. The town is famous for its proud rugby tradition and is a centre of tinplate production. In the mid 20th century, Llanelli was the largest town in the world where more than half the population spoke a Celtic language. It has been ranked as the 6th largest urban area in Wales.
Llanelli is also surrounded by a number of villages and communities in the Llanelli Rural district. Some of these communities, more notably those that immediately surround the town, are often unofficially referred to as Llanelli.
Historically a minor town, Llanelli grew significantly in the 18th century and 19th century with the mining of coal and later the tinplate industry and steelworks. Many of these industries were served by the Llanelly and Mynydd Mawr Railway which opened in 1803.
Llanelli became such a significant regional producer of tin that it was referred to as Tinopolis by the latter half of the 19th century.
Rugby Union The town's rugby union teamsthe Scarlets regional side are a world famous rugby side. The Scarlets are a Welsh professional rugby union team based in south-west Wales. The Llanelli Scarlets were founded in 2003, as one of the five (now four) regional teams created by the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU). Llanelli Rugby Football Club (Welsh: Clwb Rygbi Llanelli) is a Welsh rugby union club founded in 1875 (though often recorded as 1872) and its senior team is one of the leading club sides in Wales. Llanelli RFC was founded on 11 November 1875 when a group of local gentlemen met at the Athenaeum in Llanelli to form a rugby football club. Several sources state that Llanelli formed in 1872, and the club officially celebrated its centenary in 1972; though more recent information suggests that the centenary year was chosen to coincide with the visit of the 1972 touring All Blacks. In 1884 Llanelli played an Irish XV who stopped off in the town having played Wales in Cardiff a couple of days previously. It was in this match that they wore a scarlet colour shirt which they've worn ever since and which also created the clubs nickname "The Scarlets" and the name of the regional team (Llanelli Scarlets) for the area nearly 120 years later. 9 - 3 is a poem by Welsh comedian and singer Max Boyce and refers to the match between Llanelli and the New Zealand All Blacks at Stradey Park in front of 26,000 supporters on 31 October 1972. Llanelli took a 6-0 lead through a converted try but New Zealand struck back to make it 6-3. A long distance Andy Hill penalty ensured Llanelli emerged victors by 9-3 and the crowd famously ran onto the pitch at the end and carried off players such as Delme Thomas.
Llanelli A.F.C. is a Professional Welsh football team that plays in the Welsh Premier League. In the 1950s, in an effort to gain admission to the Football League they signed a number of professional players such as Jock Stein, later to become a legend at Celtic The bid to gain entry failed, and the club sunk back into obscurity for some years.

Llanelli is located on the south coast of West Wales, but is linked to many national locations via good road, rail and air services. The spelling Llanelly is an anglicised form which was used in government and official documents until 1965.
