Some may want to rent houses to stay at. Some may want to stay at houses that are in high status regions. Some may want to rent luxury or cheap houses. Some may want to rent houses that have high status. Some may want to stay at houses that have access to parking facilities. Some may want to stay at houses that have access to luxury.

An apartment is a self-contained housing unit that occupies only part of a building. Apartments may be owned (by an owner/occupier) or rented (by tenants).

An apartment building, block of flats or tenement, is a multi-unit dwelling made up of several (generally four or more) apartments (US), or flats (UK).

Apartment buildings are used to house people from all social groups, from the lower socio-economic (such as public housing which features rentals and very basic living standards) to the wealthy, which sometimes include penthouse apartments (with luxury add-ons such as doormen, security, elevators, balconies, swimming pools and private gymnasiums, tennis courts and even boat moorings). Additionally, some apartment buildings, are designed to contain mostly studio apartments, serviced apartments or boarding houses to accommodate contemporary itinerant lifestyles.

A condominium, or condo, is a form of housing tenure and other real property where a specified part of a piece of real estate (usually of an apartment house) is individually owned while use of and access to common facilities in the piece such as hallways, heating system, elevators, exterior areas is executed under legal rights associated with the individual ownership and controlled by the association of owners that jointly represent ownership of the whole piece. Colloquially, the term is often used to refer to the unit itself in place of the word "apartment". A condominium may be simply defined as an "apartment" that the tenant "owns" as opposed to rents.

A triple-decker (also referred to as a three-decker) is a three-story apartment building, typically of light-framed, wood construction, where each floor usually consists of a single apartment; although two apartments per floor is also common.

A studio apartment, also known as a studio flat (UK), efficiency apartment or bachelor/bachelorette style apartment, is a self-contained, small apartment, which combines living room, bedroom and kitchenette into a single unit, barring a bathroom. "Bachelor" or "efficiency" apartments are sometimes smaller than studio apartments.

In British usage, a studio flat has its own bathroom; a single room with cooking facilities and a shared bathroom is known as a bedsit.

A house generally refers to a shelter or building that is a dwelling or place for habitation by human beings. The term includes many kinds of dwellings ranging from rudimentary huts of nomadic tribes to high-rise apartment buildings. However, the word can also be used as a verb ("to house"), and can have adjectival formations as well. In some contexts, "house" may mean the same as dwelling, residence, home, abode, accommodation, housing, lodging, among other meanings. The social unit that lives in a house is known as a household. Most commonly, a household is a family unit of some kind, though households can be other social groups, such as single persons, or groups of unrelated individuals. Settled agrarian and industrial societies are composed of household units living permanently in housing of various types, according to a variety of forms of land tenure. English-speaking people generally call any building they routinely occupy "home". Many people leave their houses during the day for work and recreation but typically return to them to sleep or for other activities.
