Inch Polo Festival
.
The 2008 Inch Polo Festival, on Inch Strand, on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry on the West coast of Ireland. Polo teams from around the world are invited, including teams from South Africa, Germany, Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
It is the first polo tournament to be played on sand using polo grass rules instead of arena sand.
It started in 2007.
Polo was first played in Europe in Limerick in the 1860s, but went into a decline in popularity.
The ball rolls further and faster than grass and it is possible to run 6 full length fields - end to end - simultaneously. This means that there is a four hour window around low tide to play the matches. Excellent viewing is available from the sand dunes and ponies can be washed off in the sea after matches.
The
Dingle Peninsula has a unique reputation for traditional Irish hospitality.
It is held at the close of the European polo season for a final polo showdown on the sands of Inch Strand.
The tournament invloes 3 trophies
A international open;
a ladies open;
and the Irish open - the Ungodly Cup - which was Laois in the first year.
The
Dingle Peninsula (Irish: Corca Dhuibhne), sometimes anglicized as Corkaguiney)
is located in County Kerry and is the most westerly point of the Republic of Ireland.
