A pic of her
Kayte Lauren Christensen is a American professional basketball player who has competed internationally & for a short while played for the Phoenix Mercury in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).
Kayte grew up on her family's ranch in the Modoc County sawmill ghost town of Ivy in Jess Valley, a dozen miles east of Likely, California. Their home was next door to her grandmother's, with the historic 1922 post office of Ivy, California between them, serving as a glorified shed. The ghost town came to life with sports action for a few years as Kayte played one-on-one, & occasionally two-on-two, against her Dad, Randy, & older sisters at the hoop that he set up for them at the end of the driveway.
Those who appreciate Kayte's aggressive basketball style can thank those years when she, as the youngest of a whole family of proverbial beanpoles, & with the latest growth spurt of the whole bunch, played basketball & learned to compete against them. In particular, the middle sister of the three had the earliest growth spurt, & for a time, although she was only a year or two older, she had legs up where Kayte had shoulders, & gave words like lanky & gangling a whole new meaning.
She attended South Fork Elementary School in Likely, & she & her sisters were a source of entertainment there, whether playing basketball at school, or playing cops & robbers around the historic buildings - many of them complete with 19th-century-style raised wooden sidewalks - & all over Likely after school, while waiting for Dad to pick them up on his way home from work for UPS. Once Kayte graduated from South Fork, her family moved into town to be closer to the high school, & to her grandmother, Elsie Cantrall, who was in a care home by this time. Jess Valley & Likely never were quite the same without them.
Kayte attended Modoc High School in Alturas, California, graduating in 1998. That year, her varsity girls basketball team won the California Interscholastic Federation State Division V Championship. The MHS girls had been in the running for several years before that, thanks to Kayte & her older sisters. In her spare time, she also tutored younger girls at basketball.
Kayte attended college at UC Santa Barbara University & attended the same classes as fellow WNBA player Lindsay Taylor. She was Santa Barbara's all-time career field goal leader. She also ranks among the top ten in rebounds & blocked shots.
In her four seasons in the WNBA, Christensen holds career averages of 3.8 points, 2.9 rebounds & 0.75 steals. Christensen was selected by Phoenix Mercury in the third round (40th overall) of the 2002 WNBA Draft.
She would later sign with the Houston Comets on March 24, 2006, & waived until May 19 when she failed to make the regular-season roster. She has since rejoined the Mercury.
