London Commuter Towns

Commuter towns in the London area are often for tourists who need a place to live. Some may want to commute to London from a town or city outside London. They may want to live in a smaller town but work in the city. They may want to live in the city they grew up in but work in the the city of London. They may find house costs too much in London so want a house near London but not in the city. Some may want to purchase houses, cottages, apartments, skyscrapers, homes or flats in the region. Some may want to stay in hotels in commuter towns.

Commuter towns in London are often needed for people who want a place to live. Some may want to stay in accommodation in the region of the greater London area.

The London commuter belt is the metropolitan area surrounding London, England from which it is possible to commute to work in the capital. It is alternatively known as the London metropolitan area or the Southeast metropolitan area. It should not be confused with Greater London or the Greater London Urban Area. The boundaries are not fixed; they expand as transport options improve and affordable housing moves further away from London. The commuter belt currently covers much of the South East region and part of the East of England region, including the Home Counties of Kent, Surrey, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, and Essex.

A commuter town is an urban community that is primarily residential, from which most of the workforce commute out to earn their livelihood. Many commuter towns act as suburbs of a nearby metropolis that workers travel to daily, and many suburbs are commuter towns. Commuter towns belong to the metropolitan area of a city, and a ring of commuter towns around an urban area is known as a commuter belt.

Suburbs and commuter towns are often the same place, but sometimes not. As with college town, resort town, and mill town, the term "commuter town" describes the place's predominant economic function. A suburb in contrast is a community of lesser size, density, political power and/or commerce than a nearby community.

Home counties is an informal phrase used to designate the group of counties that border or surround London, England. The term originated in the late nineteenth century, and is probably derived from the Home Circuit of the itinerant Assize Court. The home counties have no official definition but are usually understood as coinciding with the London commuter belt or the London Metropolitan Area, i.e., where people can work in London without living in the city and travel home each evening. The home counties are sometimes also called London and the South East.
