Macao Hotels

Hotels in Macao are often required for people who need accommodation in the city. Some may need to visit the city for a vacation or work, or study, or for sports, entertainment, or culture. Some may want to have a cheap hotel, some may want to see a luxury hotel.

Macau was both the first and the last European colony in China. Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 16th century and subsequently administered the region until the handover on December 20, 1999.

Macau is situated 60 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong and 145 kilometres from Guangzhou. It consists of the Macau Peninsula itself and the islands of Taipa and Coloane. The peninsula is formed by the Zhujiang (Pearl River) estuary on the east and the Xijiang (West River) on the west. It borders the Zhuhai Special Economic Zone in mainland China. The main border crossing between Macau and China is known as the Portas do Cerco (Barrier Gate) on the Macau side, and the Gongbei checkpoint on the Zhuhai side. Macau Peninsula was originally an island, but a connecting sandbar gradually turned into a narrow isthmus, thus changing Macau into a peninsula. Land reclamation in the 17th century transformed Macau into a peninsula with generally flat terrain, though numerous steep hills still mark the original land mass. Alto de Coloane is the highest point in Macau, with an altitude of 170.6 metres.

The mixing of the Chinese and Portuguese cultures and religious traditions for more than four centuries has left Macau with an inimitable collection of holidays, festivals and events.

The Red Market is a 3 story wet market in Macau. It was erected in 1936 and derives its name from the red bricks used in construction. The market is located at the intersection of Avenida Almirante Lacerda and Avenida Horta e Costa on the Macau Peninsula and is one of the most popular markets in Macau.

Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro also commonly known as San Man Lo is the main avenue in the heart of Macau Peninsula. The main shopping belt is marked by the streets of Avenida do Infante D. Henrique and Avenida Almeida Ribeiro, S. Domingos Market, Rua da Palha, Rua do Campo, and Rua Pedro Nolasco da Silva. Nearby, on the lanes around the Rua das Estalagens, is a local flea market, a popular spot to look for Chinese antiques.

Macau is famous for the blend of Portuguese and Chinese cultures and its gambling industry with casinos.
