Earth
Earth is a 2007 feature-length
nature documentary that provides a portrait of our planet over a one-year period.
It was filmed over five years in more than 200 different locations by 40 specialist
crews. The production costs, at 45 million dollars, were higher then any other
documentary before it.
Produced by the BBC Natural History Unit, the film is a companion piece to the 2006 television series Planet Earth and like its small-screen counterpart was filmed entirely in high-definition.
The central characters in the film are polar bears, African elephants and humpback whales, all of them mothers who must overcome the perils of their environment to ensure that they and their vulnerable offspring survive.
While the film shows predators catching prey, bloody scenes are avoided.
The music has been criticized for disturbing
the natural sounds and silence.
