Margate is a seaside resort town within the Thanet district of East Kent, England. It lies 38.1 miles east-northeast of Maidstone, along the North Foreland of the coastline of England.
Margate's history is closely tied to the sea; it was a "limb" of Dover in the ancient confederation of the Cinque Ports.
Margate was recorded as "Meregate" in 1264 and as "Margate" in 1299, but the spelling continued to vary into modern times. The name is thought to refer to a pool gate or gap in a cliff where pools of water are found, often allowing swimmers to jump in. The cliffs of the Isle of Thanet are composed of chalk, a fossil-bearing rock.
Margate had a fine Victorian pier which was destroyed by a violent storm in 1978.
The town's history is tied closely to the sea and it has a proud maritime tradition. Margate was a "limb" of Dover in the ancient confederation of the Cinque ports. It was added to the confederation in the 15th century. Margate has been a leading seaside resort for at least 250 years. Like its neighbour Ramsgate, it has been a traditional holiday destination for Londoners drawn to its sandy beaches.
Margate also consists of Cliftonville, Garlinge, Palm Bay and Westbrook.
Cliftonville is a coastal area of the town of Margate, situated to the east of the main town. It also contains the area known as Palm Bay.
The original Palm Bay estate was built in the 1930s as a number of large, wide avenues with detached and semi-detached houses with driveways, garages and gardens. This land was sold by Mr Sidney Simon Van Den Bergh to the Palm Bay Estate Co on 23 June 1924. Such avenues include Gloucester Avenue and Leicester Avenue.
The estate covers the eastern part of Cliftonville and was fields when the first was built. It extends east beyond Northumberland Avenue and has been developed in phases. An earlier phase covered the northern ends of Leicester and Gloucester Avenues and the whole of Clarence and Magnolia Avenues; the later phase extending eastwards of Princess Margaret Avenue is a Wimpy style housing estate with small houses largely identical in appearance and of less substantial build quality that the original 1930's estate.
The eastward expansion of Cliftonville has included much of the former parish of Northdown including Northdown Park and House.
Garlinge is a village in the suburbs of Margate in Kent, England, situated 2 km southwest of the centre of the town. It is in the Thanet local government district.
Palm Bay is an area within Cliftonville, a suburb of Margate. It is in South East England and it is in the county of Kent in the United Kingdom. The area is predominantly a housing area, but has a large area of recreational land for the general public. Palm or Palmers Bay is one of many bays round the coast of Thanet. Palm Bay lies between Walpole and Botany Bays and is popular as a centre for Jet Skiing, the eastern end of Palm Bay is also know as Forness Bay and is the home to a local water skiing club.
For at least 250 years, the town has been a leading seaside resort in the UK, drawing Londoners to its beaches, Margate Sands.
Margate Football Club is an English football team based in the seaside resort of Margate, Kent. The club was founded in 1896 and joined the Southern Football League in 1933.
