Plymouth is a city y area on the coast of Devon, England, about 190 miles south west of London. It is built between the mouths of the rivers Plym and Tamar, where they join Plymouth Sound. There are suburbs of Plympton and Plymstock, on the east side of the River Plym.
Plymouth lies between the River Plym to the east and the River Tamar to the west; both rivers flow into the natural harbour of Plymouth Sound. The River Tamar forms the county boundary between Devon and Cornwall and its estuary forms the Hamoaze on which is sited Devonport Dockyard. The River Plym, which flows off Dartmoor to the north east, forms a smaller estuary to the east of the city called Cattewater. Plymouth Sound is protected from the sea by the Plymouth Breakwater, in use since 1814. In the Sound is Drake's Island which is seen from Plymouth Hoe, a flat public area on top of limestone cliffs. The Unitary Authority of Plymouth is 30.8 square miles (79.78 km²), but the city of Plymouth, as cited from Plymouth City Council, is 30.61 square miles. The topography rises from sea level to a height, at Roborough, of about 509 feet above Ordnance Datum (AOD).
Because of its coastal location, the economy of Plymouth has traditionally been maritime, in particular the defence sector.
The University of Plymouth has a wide variety of Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes which are currently taught across campuses in Plymouth, Exeter, and Exmouth. The University of Plymouth was previously (and unpopularly) known as Polytechnic South West between 1989 and 1992. Before that, its constituent bodies were known as Plymouth Polytechnic, Rolle College, and Seale-Hayne College. The new university also absorbed the Plymouth School of Maritime Studies. It was designated a university in 1992 along with the other former polytechnics.
Plymouth Sound, or locally just The Sound, is a bay at Plymouth in England.
Its south west and south east corners are Penlee Point in Cornwall and Wembury Point on Devon, a distance of about 3 nautical miles (6 km). Its northern limit is Plymouth Hoe giving a north-south distance of nearly 3 nautical miles.
The Sound has three water entrances. The marine entrance is from the English Channel to the south, with a deep-water channel to the west of the breakwater. There are two freshwater intlets: one, from the northwest, is from the River Tamar via the Hamoaze and Devonport Dockyard, the largest naval dockyard in western Europe. The other, at northeast, is from the River Plym disgorrging into its narrow estuary, Cattewater harbour between Mount Batten and the Royal Citadel.
