The country is located east of the international date line and south of the equator, about halfway between Hawai‘i and New Zealand in the Polynesian region of the Pacific Ocean. The total land area is 2934 km² (slightly smaller than the US state of Rhode Island), consisting of the two large islands of Upolu and Savai'i which account for 99% of the total land area, and eight small islets: the three islets in the Apolima Strait (Manono Island, Apolima and Nu'ulopa), the four Aleipata Islands off the eastern end of Upolu (Nu'utele, Nu'ulua, Namua, and Fanuatapu), and Nu'usafe'e (less than 0.01 km² in area and about 1.4 km off the south coast of Upolu at the village of Vaovai). The main island of Upolu is home to nearly three-quarters of Samoa's population, and its capital city is Apia. The climate is tropical, and a rainy season from November to April. Savai'i is the largest of the Samoan islands and the third largest Polynesian Island after Tahiti and New Zealand. The population of Savali'i is 42,000 people.

The fa'a Samoa, or traditional Samoan way, remains a strong force in Samoan life and politics. Despite centuries of European influence, Samoa maintains its historical customs, social and political systems, and language. Samoans are deeply spiritual and religious people, and have subtly adapted the dominant religion of Christianity to 'fit in' with fa'a Samoa and vice versa. As such, ancient beliefs continue to co-exist side-by-side with Christianity, particularly in regard to the traditional customs and rituals of fa'a Samoa.

The Samoan islands have been produced by volcanism, the source of which is a geologic hotspot which is the probable result of a mantle plume. While all of the islands have volcanic origins, only Savai'i has had recent eruptions and could be considered volcanically active. The traditional Samoan dance is the Siva. This dance is similar to the Hawaiian hula, with gentle movements of the hands and feet in time to music and which tells a story, although the Samoan male dances are more aggressive and snappy. The main sports played in Samoa are Rugby Union and Samoan cricket. Rugby Union is the national football code of Samoa, and whenever the Manu Samoa or the Samoan Rugby 7s team plays, the nation comes to a standstill.

Upolu is an island in Samoa, formed by a massive basaltic shield volcano which rises from the seafloor of the western Pacific Ocean. The island is 75 kilometres (47 mi) long, 1,125 km2 (434 sq mi) in area, and is the second largest and most populated of the Samoan islands, lying to the east of the "big island", Savai'i. The capital Apia is in the middle of the north coast with Faleolo International Airport at the western end of the island. The island has not had any historically recorded eruptions.

In Polynesian mythology (specifically Samoan), Upolu is the first woman on the island of the same name. In the late 18th and early 19th century, the island was sometimes called Ojalava or Ojolava.

In the late 19th century Robert Louis Stevenson had a four-hundred acre plantation at Vailimi and died there in 1894. It is speculated by Swiss author Alex Capus, that Stevenson found the Treasure of Lima around 1890 on the near island of Tafahi which made him and his family very rich.

Apia, is the capital of the Independent State of Samoa. The city is located on the northern coast of Upolu Island. It is the nation's major port and only city. Fish and copra are the country's major exports, and cotton goods, motor vehicles, meats, and sugar are the major imports. Apia is situated on a natural harbour at the mouth of the Vaisigano River. It is on a narrow coastal plain with Mount Vaea (elev. 472 m) directly to its south. Two main ridges run south on either side of the Vaisigano River, with roads on each. The more western of these is Cross Island Road, one of the few roads crossing to the south coast of Upolu.

Savai’i, the "soul of Samoa", is the larger main island in the state of Samoa, formed by a massive basaltic shield volcano which rises from the seafloor of the western Pacific Ocean. Savai’i is an active volcano, which last erupted in 1911 with lava flows. Home to approximately 50,000 people, it is less developed than Upolu, the other main island. The ports of Salelologa and Asau are situated on Savai’i.

Savai’i is home of the Pulemele’i Mound, Alofa’aga Blowholes, and Moso's Footprint, which date back to prehistoric times. Falealupo, just 20 miles from the dateline, is the westernmost village of Samoa and arguably, the world. In the early 19th century, the island was sometimes called Pola.

The Apolima Strait separates the two main islands of Samoa, Savai'i, to the northwest, and Upolu to the southeast. Three small islands lie in the strait, Manono, Apolima and tiny uninhabited Nu'ulopa

The Aleipata Islands is a group of four uninhabited islands off the eastern end (the historical Aleipata region) of Upolu Island, Samoa, with an aggregate area of 1.68 km²):

Nu'utele (1.08 km²)
Nu'ulua (0.25 km²)
Namua (0.20 km²)
Fanuatapu (0.15 km²)

Namua and Fanuatapu are at the outer edge of the fringing reef of Upolu, with distances of 0.7 km and 2.5 km to the Upolu mainland, respectively. Nu'utele and Nu'ulua are 4 to 6 km further south, outside of the fringing reef, at distances of 1.4 km 3.5 km off Cape Tapaga, the southeastern headland of Upolu.

These islets are remnants of eroded volcanic tuff rings. Only Namua is open for visitors (Namua Island Resort, beaches). Fanuatapu, being the easternmost island, has a lighthouse. The islands are important nesting locations for seabirds.
