Tahiti is some 45 km wide at the widest
point and covers 1,045 km², with the highest elevation being at 2,241 m above
sea level (Mount Orohena). Mont Roonui, located on the southeastern part is 1332
m high. The island consists of two roughly round portions centered on volcanic
mountains, connected by a short isthmus named after the small town of Taravao,
which sits there. The northwestern part is known as Tahiti Nui ( big Tahiti ),
and the southeastern part, much smaller, is known as Tahiti Iti (small Tahiti)
or Taiarapu. Whereas Tahiti Nui is quite heavily populated (especially around
Papeete) and benefits from rather good infrastructure such as roads and highways,
Tahiti Iti has remained quite isolated, its southeastern half (Te Pari) being
accessible only by boat or hiking. A main road winds around the island between
the mountains and the sea while an interior road climbs past dairy farms and citrus
groves with panoramic views. Tahiti also has many swift streams, including the
Papenoo in the north.
Tourism is a significant industry, mostly to the islands of Bora Bora and Moorea. In July, the Heiva festival in Papeete celebrates Polynesian culture and the commemoration of the storming of the Bastille in France.
Faa'a International Airport or Tahiti Faa'a International Airport (French: Aéroport International Tahiti Faa'a) is located in the commune (municipality) of Faaa, on the island of Tahiti, French Polynesia, approximately 5 km southwest from the town center of Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia. It is the only airport in French Polynesia serving international flights.
Because of limited level terrain, rather than leveling large stretches of sloping agricultural land, the airport is built primarily on reclaimed land on the coral reef just off-shore. The airport, operated by Setil Aéroports, has a single 11,360 ft. runway, large and sound enough to accommodate all commercial and military aircraft.

Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean. The commune (municipality) of Papeete is located on the island of Tahiti, in the administrative subdivision of the Windward Islands, of which Papeete is the administrative capital. The French High Commissioner also resides in Papeete. It is the primary center of Tahitian and French Polynesian public and private governmental, commercial, industrial and financial services, the hub of French Polynesian tourism and a commonly used Port of call. The Windward Islands are themselves part of the Society Islands.
