Tonga is an archipelago in the south Pacific Ocean comprising many islands, including numerous inhabited ones, stretching over a distance of about 800 kilometres in a nort south line. The islands lie south of Samoa and are about one-third of the way from New Zealand to Hawaii.
Tonga is located in Oceania, an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, directly south of Western Samoa and about two thirds of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand. Its islands are divided into 3 main groups - Vava'u, Ha'apai, and Tongatapu, and cover around 800 kilometeres. The largest island is Tongatapu.
Geologically the Tongan islands are of two types: most have a limestone base formed from uplifted coral formations; others consist of limestone overlaying a volcanic base.
The islands are also known as the Friendly Islands because of the friendly reception accorded to Captain Cook on his first visit in 1773. He happened to arrive at the time of the inasi festival, the yearly donation of the first fruits to the Tu'i Tonga, the islands' paramount chief, and was invited to the festivities.
Tongans, therefore, often have to operate in two different contexts, which they often call anga fakatonga, the traditional Tongan way, and anga fakapãlangi, the Western way. A culturally adept Tongan learns both sets of rules and when to switch between them.
Nukualofa, is the capital, chief port and largest city of Tonga. The city is located on the coast of Tongatapu island. Nukualofa is the commercial, transport and social centre of Tonga.
Nukualofa was chosen as his residence by the Tui Kanokupolu Mumui, sometime around 1795. Although the Tui Kanokupolu was the worldly ruler of Tongatapu at that time, the royal court was still located in Mua with the Tui Tonga, or the Tongan line of kings. As such, Mua was the capital at that time, not Nukualofa.
The Royal Palace of the Kingdom of Tonga has been located in the northwest of the capital, Nukualofa, close to the Pacific Ocean. The wooden Palace, which was built in 1867, has been the official residence of the King of Tonga. Tonga has been a kingdom.
