There are six distinct physiographic regions of Vermont. Categorized by geological and physical attributes, they are the Northeastern Highlands, the Green Mountains, the Taconic Mountains, the Champlain Lowlands, the Valley of Vermont and the Vermont Piedmont.
Originally inhabited by Native American tribes (Abenaki, and Iroquois), the territory that is now Vermont was claimed by France but became a British possession after France's defeat in the French and Indian War. For many years, the surrounding colonies disputed control of the area, especially New Hampshire and New York. Settlers who held land titles granted by these colonies were opposed by the Green Mountain Boys militia, which eventually prevailed in creating an independent state, the Vermont Republic, which was founded during the Revolutionary War and lasted for 14 years. In 1791, Vermont joined the United States as the fourteenth state.
The Green Mountains are a mountain range in the U.S. state of Vermont. The range extends approximately 250 miles (400 km). The most notable mountains in the range include:
Mount
Mansfield, 4,393 feet, the highest point in Vermont
Killington Peak, 4,241
feet
Mount Ellen, 4,084 feet
Camel's Hump, 4,083 feet
Mount Cleveland,
3,500 feet
Mount Roosevelt, 3,580 feet
Mount Wilson, 3,756 feet
Glastenbury
Mountain, 3,748 feet
The Green Mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountains, a range that stretches from New England in the north to Georgia in the south.
The Champlain Valley is a region of the United States around Lake Champlain in Vermont and New York. It is also the most heavily populated region in Vermont, broadly stretching eastward from the lake's shore to the spine of the Green Mountains. The state's largest city, Burlington is located on the lake; the city's associated suburban communities encompass part of the central section of the valley. Beyond urbanized Chittenden County, however, the valley's landscape is primarily open pasture and row crops, making the Champlain Valley the most productive agricultural region of Vermont.
