Many tourists like to have vacations in the Balearic Islands because of the range of different toursist attractions such as beaches, historic attractions, entertainment, scenic views, different islands, a range of towns, cities, villages, mountains, rivers, lakes, and different coastal views. Some want to stay at a hotel some at a villa, house or apartment. Some might go camping.
The Balearic Islands (Catalan and official: Illes Balears; Spanish: Islas Baleares) are an archipelago in the western Mediterranean Sea, near the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. They form an autonomous community and a province of Spain, of which the capital city is Palma. The co-official languages in the Balearic Islands are Spanish and Catalan (i.e. Mallorquí, Menorquí and Eivissenc, as Catalan is known by its speakers in this territory).
The
Balearic Islands comprise Majorca and Minorca which are the Balearic Islands proper,
and other smaller islands, which together constitute an autonomous community of
Spain. The main islands of the autonomous community are Majorca (Mallorca in Catalan),
Minorca (Menorca), Ibiza (Eivissa), and Formentera, all of which are popular tourist
destinations. Among the minor islands is Cabrera, which is the location of the
Parc Nacional de l'Arxipèlag de Cabrera. The islands can be further grouped,
with Majorca, Minorca, and Cabrera as the Gymnesian Islands, and Ibiza and Formentera
as the Pine Islands.
The island of Minorca was a British dependency most of the 18th century as a result of the Treaty of Utrecht, when Spain ceded Gibraltar and Minorca to Great Britain after being captured during the War of the Spanish Succession. It was finally and permanently ceded to Spain by the Treaty of Amiens in 1802 during the French Revolutionary Wars.
Balearic cuisine is a Mediterranean cuisine as cooked in the Balearic Islands, Spain. It can be regarded as part of a wider Catalan cuisine, since it shares many dishes and ingredients with Catalonia and the Valencian Community. Others view it as part of a more global Spanish cuisine. Traditional Balearic cuisine is rich in vegetables, cereal and legumes as well as being low in fats. A succinct selection of the primary dishes would be ensaimades, seafood and vegetable stews, sobrassada, cocas, tumbet, Maó cheese and wine.
Palma is the major city and port on the island of Majorca and capital city of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands in Spain. The name of Ciutat de Mallorca (city of Mallorca) was used before the War of the Spanish Succession, and is still used by people in Mallorca (in fact there are other cities in Mallorca but they are much smaller). It is situated on the south coast of the island on the Bay of Palma.
Majorca (Spanish and Catalan: Mallorca) is the largest island of Spain. It is located in the Mediterranean Sea and part of the Balearic Islands archipelago. The name derives from Latin insula maior, "larger island"; later Maiorica.
The capital of the island, Palma, is also the capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. The Cabrera archipelago is administratively grouped with Majorca (in the municipality of Palma). The anthem of Majorca is La Balanguera.
Minorca (Catalan and Spanish: Menorca; from Latin Balearis Minor, later Minorica "minor island") is one of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean Sea and belongs to Spain. It takes its name from being smaller than nearby island of Majorca.
Ibiza (Catalan: Eivissa) is an island located in the Mediterranean Sea about 80 km off the coast of Spain. It is the third largest of the Balearic Islands autonomous community (Spain). With Formentera, it is one of the two Pine Islands. Its largest cities are Ibiza Town (Catalan:Vila d'Eivissa or simply Vila), Santa Eulària des Riu and Sant Antoni de Portmany.
Formentera is the smallest and southernmost island of the Illes Pitiüses group (which includes Ibiza and Formentera) and belongs to the Balearic Islands autonomous community (Spain). It is 19 kilometres long and is located approximately 3 nautical miles south of Ibiza in the Mediterranean Sea. Its major villages are Sant Francesc Xavier, Sant Ferran de ses Roques, El Pilar de la Mola and La Savina.
