car hire in newfoundland

Car hire in Newfoundland is highly significant for those of us wishign to hire or rent a car in Newfoundland, a North Eastern element of Canada. Newfoundland & Labrador (French: Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador) is a province of Canada, the tenth to join the Confederation. Geographically, the province consists of the island of Newfoundland & the mainland Labrador, on Canada's Atlantic coast. On entry into Canada in 1949, the entire province was known as Newfoundland, but since 1964, the province's government has referred to itself as the "Government of Newfoundland & Labrador", & on December 6, 2001, an amendment was made to the Constitution of Canada to change the province's official name to "Newfoundland & Labrador" In day-to-day conversation, however, Canadians generally still refer to the province itself as "Newfoundland" & to the region within the province as "Labrador." Tourism is a significant part of the economy. In 2006 nearly 500,000 non-resident tourists visited Newfoundland & Labrador, spending an estimated $366 million. Many needa acr in Newfoundland, some if they are holidaying here from overseas, & then drive around uop here, in this quite Celtic area. Sme may be here to see the ice, or snow, or fishing history, like in that movie that opne the shipping news, he drove in a car in thatl Maybe someone in a documentary would need a car to hire maybe you will need special cars for here. Afte rall it will be tougher than some cinditions, & your car if uit is old, & not that good, may not be able to get here. It may also be a nice break to hire c ar here, or m,aybe yours is being done up here, or is broken down, or maybe you need to hire c a car for someone else here. The Newfoundland Railway was a railway which operated on the island of Newfoundland from 1898 to 1988. With a total track length of 906 miles (1,458 km), it was the longest 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) narrow gauge railway system in North America. L'Anse aux Meadows was a Norse settlement on the northernmost tip of Newfoundland, that has been dated to be approximately 1000 years old, making it the only genuine evidence of Pre-Columbian contact between the Old & New Worlds. It is a likely location of Vinland, although this has been disputed. Newfoundland is a large island off the north-east coast of North America, & the most populous part of the Canadian province Newfoundland & Labrador. It is separated from the Labrador Peninsula by the Strait of Belle Isle & from Cape Breton Island by Cabot Strait.

The only authenticated Viking settlement was discovered by Norwegian explorer, Dr. Helge Ingstad & his archaeologist wife, Anne Stine at L’Anse aux Meadows in 1960. The site of a multi-year archaeological dig, the settlement dating more than 500 years before Christopher Columbus contains the earliest European structures in North America. Named a World Heritage site by UNESCO, it is believed to be the legendary “Vinland” settlement of explorer Leif Eriksson.

Newfoundland was later explored by Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot) then by Giovanni da Verrazano in 1524 whose expedition was financed by the citizens of Lyon, France, under the auspices of King Francois I.

A British colony, in 1949 the citizens of Newfoundland voted in a referendum to join Canada, becoming the 10th Province. An automobile or motor car is a wheeled motor vehicle for transporting passengers, which also carries its own engine or motor. Most definitions of the term specify that automobiles are designed to run primarily on roads, to have seating for one to eight people, to typically have four wheels, & to be constructed principally for the transport of people rather than goods. However, the term automobile is far from precise, because there are many types of vehicles that do similar tasks. There are two major types of car rental companies. The first group of companies own their own cars (known as a fleet) & may have agreements with car manufacturers to provide all the cars for that fleet. An example of this type of company would be Hertz or Europcar.

The other type of car rental company operate on a broker model & have commercial agreements with other car rental companies to provide access to their fleets of cars. Rental conditions

Car rentals are subject to many conditions which vary from one brand to another. The vehicle must be returned in a good condition & must not exceed a maximum driven distance, otherwise extra fees may be incurred. Additionally, some companies set a minimum age for the vehicle driver, which in some cases is as high as 25, even in countries where the minimum legal age to hold a driver's license is much lower.

Recent conditions have utilised GPS technology to limit maximum speeds or driving to specific regions. Renewable fuel vehicles are available in certain areas.

The vast majority of car rental companies require the use of a credit card to make it easier for them to trace a person should they attempt to steal a car, or to charge additional fees at will if a defect is later found with the car.Car classification

To allow for a uniform classification & easy comparison of car rental prices, the Association of Car Rental Industry Systems & Standards (ACRISS) has developed the ACRISS Car Classification Code coding system. This describes the size, door count, gearbox type (manual/automatic) & whether the car is air-conditioned, encoded into four letters.

Following World War II, in 1946, an election took place to determine the membership of the Newfoundland National Convention, charged with deciding the future of Newfoundland. The Convention voted to hold a referendum to decide between continuing the Commission of Government or restoring responsible government. Joseph R. Smallwood, the leader of the confederates, moved the inclusion of a third option — that of confederation with Canada. The Convention defeated his motion, but he did not give up, instead gathering more than 5,000 petition signatures within a fortnight, which he sent to London through the Governor. The United Kingdom, insisting that it would not give Newfoundland any further financial assistance, added this third option of having Newfoundland join Canada to the ballot. After much debate, an initial referendum took place on June 3, 1948 to decide between continuing with the Commission of Government, reverting to Dominion status, or joining the Canadian Confederation. Three parties participated in the referendum campaign: Smallwood's Confederate Association campaigned for the Confederation option while in the anti-Confederation campaign Peter Cashin's Responsible Government League and Chesley Crosbie's Economic Union Party (both of which called for a vote for responsible government) took part. No party advocated continuing the Commission of Government.
The Newfoundland dollar bill issued in 1920

The result proved inconclusive, with 44.5% supporting the restoration of Dominion status, 41.1% for confederation with Canada, and 14.3% for continuing the Commission of Government. Between the first and second referendums, rumours had it that Catholic bishops were using their religious influence to alter the outcome of the votes. The Orange Order, incensed, called on all its members to vote for Confederation, as the Catholics voted for responsible government. The Protestants of Newfoundland outnumbered the Catholics by a ratio of 2:1. Some commentators believe that this sectarian divide greatly influenced the outcome of the second referendum. A second referendum on July 22, 1948, which asked Newfoundlanders to choose between Confederation and Dominion status, produced a vote of 52% to 48% for confederation, and Newfoundland joined Canada on March 31, 1949.
