Blackpool is a seaside town in Lancashire, England. Lying along the coast of the Irish Sea. It lies 40 miles north west of the city of Manchester.
Blackpool is heavily dependent on tourism. In what is often regarded as its heyday, Blackpool thrived as the factory workers of northern England took their annual holidays there en masse in the early half of the last century.
Pleasure Beach Blackpool, formerly "Blackpool Pleasure Beach", is a family owned amusement park in Blackpool, England. It is currently the most visited tourist attraction within the UK.
The initial park was founded in 1896 by Alderman William George Bean, who said his intent was to create an American Style Amusement Park, the fundamental principle of which is to make adults feel like children again and to inspire gaiety of a primarily innocent character. In 1903 Bean and John Outhwaite purchased 30 acres of land known as the Watson Estate to be rented out by various trade stalls and traditional fairground rides. In 1905 the name Blackpool Pleasure Beach was discovered and advertised. In 1910, Blackpool Pleasure Beach Ltd was founded by Bean and Outhwaite. Outhwaire died in 1911, leaving the initial business to Bean. However the Outhwaite family still had ownership of shares in the park. The Casino opened in 1913 at a cost of £13,352. The Whip, Virginia Reel, Noah's Ark, Big Dipper (£25,000) and Dodgems were also opened.
In 1923 land was reclaimed from the sea front. It was at this period that the park moved to its current location above Watson Road, which was built under the Pleasure Beach in 1932 and a further approximate 12 acres was purchased. In 1929 Bean died suddenly of pneumonia. His daughter, Lillian Doris Bean had already married a young businessman, Leonard Thompson. The park had been left to the couple who now had full control over the business, after the remaining Outhwaite family sold their share to the Thompsons. During this time, many of the classic rides had opened. The Pretzel ride became known as the Ghost Train and in 1935 the Grand National roller coaster was built. That year also saw the debut of the Laughing Man at the front of the park and the Turtle chase powered coaster opened. In 1939 a new Casino building was commissioned and built to the front of the park. In 1958, the Wild Mouse was built and in 1961 Alice In Wonderland opened.
Pleasure Beach, Blackpool is currently situated along the South Shore area of Blackpool, adjacent to the prom and opposite the South Pier along Ocean Boulevard and directly above Watson road. The main entrance is to the left of the initial park and approximatley 75 meters from the Pleasure Beach Casino. The main car park is to the left side of the White Tower restaurant, behind Valhalla and to the right of the Grand National station. The additional coach park is to the back of the park adjacent to the Pepsi Max Big One and in front of Valhalla and Ice Blast.
