Nightlife
Ibiza is considered a popular tourist destination, especially due to its legendary and at times riotous nightlife centered around two areas: Ibiza Town, the island's capital on the southern shore and Sant Antoni to the West. Well known nightclubs are Privilege (the largest club in the world), Eden (the busiest nightclub in Sant Antoni), Es Paradís (noted for its water parties), Amnesia (known for foam parties), Space (an afterparty club), Pacha, and DC10. During the summer, well known DJs perform at the various clubs on weekly schedules, in between touring to other international destinations. Many of these DJs use Ibiza as an outlet for presenting new songs within the house, trance and techno genres of electronic dance music. The season traditionally begins at the start of June with Space and DC10's opening parties and finishes on the first weekend of October with the Closing Parties. A typical schedule for clubbers going to Ibiza includes waking at noon, early evening naps, late night clubbing, and disco sunrises. Due to Ibiza's notable tolerance toward misbehavior from young adult (teenagers) tourists, it has acquired the sobriquet Gomorrah of the Med.
Ibiza
is administratively part of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands,
whose capital is Palma, on the island of Majorca. Ibiza comprises five of the
community's 67 municipalities. Clockwise from the south coast, these are: Sant
Josep de sa Talaia, Sant Antoni de Portmany, Sant Joan de Labritja, Santa Eulària
des Riu, Ibiza Town (Eivissa / Vila)
There also exists a genre of dance music named after Ibiza dubbed Balearic Beat, similarly to the way Goa trance is named after Goa, India. The style tries to reflect the atmosphere of Ibiza. The atmosphere is brought on with the use of synthesized string instruments, the sound of waves, mandolins and guitars, and wispy vocals.
Ibiza (Catalan: Eivissa) is an island located in the Mediterranean Sea about 80 km off the coast of Spain. It is the third largest of the Balearic Islands autonomous community (Spain). With Formentera, it is one of the two Pine Islands. Its largest cities are Ibiza Town (Catalan : Vila d'Eivissa or simply Vila), Santa Eulària des Riu and Sant Antoni de Portmany.
Ibiza is a city and municipality located on the southeast coast of the island of Ibiza in the Balearic Islands autonomous community. Although called Ibiza in Spanish, its official Catalan name is Eivissa (as restored in 1986) and its inhabitants call it Vila d'Eivissa or simply Vila. It's divided into two main parts: the old town, called Dalt Vila (Upper town), located in the little mountain by the sea, and the modern part, called Eixample. On top of Dalt Vila there's the cathedral of Santa Maria d'Eivissa (14th century). There's also the punic necropolis of Puig des Molins.
The city, is the capital and most populous settlement of the island and of the Illes Pitiüses group (which includes Ibiza and Formentera).
It is widely known for its extravagant nightlife. Two of the island's most luxurious nightclubs, Pacha and El Divino, are located in Ibiza Town itself whereas Space is located just south of the town, near the airport.
Sant Antoni de Portmany is a town in the western coast of Ibiza. It was called San Antonio Abad in Spanish until 1986, when its Catalan official name was restored, however, most English-speakers still refer to it as San Antonio. It is the second-largest town and municipality in Ibiza; an island long considered by clubbers to be the clubbing capital of the world. It is situated on Sant Antoni Bay on the west coast of the island, part of the Spanish autonomous community of the Balearic Islands.
Pine Islands or Pityuses is the name given collectively to the Balearic Islands of Ibiza and Formentera, in the Mediterranean Sea.
The islands are situated approximately 100 km southwest of the island of Majorca, and approximately 80 km east of the Spanish mainland (Cabo de la Nao, Alicante, Valencia ).
In antiquity they were known as the Pityussa islands, listed in Claudius Ptolemy's Geography, under the names Ophiusis and Ebyssus, which had a town of the same. The islands were used by Cilician pirates as a base. The Roman general Annius drove them out with a large fleet and with them the Roman renegade general Quintus Sertorius, who was seeking refuge there.
The
Pine Islands are sometimes grouped together as part of the Balearic Islands, or
else considered separate with the Balearics proper being Majorca and Minorca.
Politically, they are part of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands.
