Cinemas in London

Numerous people like to watch movies in the city of London. Many tourists like to watch movies in the city and so do many people who live in the city. The city has many cinemas to provide movies. Some visitors to the city may want to watch old movies or new movies. Some may want t see films that are classic or the newest around. Some may want to watch cultural films or movies from specific parts of the globe. For instance some groups may want to watch movies from their homeland or about their culture. Some may want to watch mainstream movies or movies that are not from the main film stable companies. Some may want to see movies based on the city itself. They may want to go to cinemas that are large or small. They may want to see luxury cinemas or cheap ones. Some may want to visit a modern cinema complex or an old classic one.

London is one of the world's leading business, financial and cultural centres and its influence in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion and the arts contribute to its status as a major global city. London boasts major Heritage Sites such as the the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and St. Margaret's Church; the Tower of London; the historic settlement of Greenwich; and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Traditionally the London accent has been given the famous Cockney label, and was similar to many accents of the South East of England, developing a unique form of slang known as Cockney Rhyming Slang.

London has played a significant role in the film industry, and has major studios at Pinewood, Ealing, Shepperton, Elstree and Leavesden, as well as an important special effects and post production community centred in Soho in central London. Working Title Films has its headquarters in London. The city also hosts a number of performing arts schools, including the Central School of Speech and Drama and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. The London Film Festival is held each year in October.

Piccadilly Circus is a famous road junction and public space of London's West End in the City of Westminster, built in 1819 to connect Regent Street with the major shopping street of Piccadilly. In this context a circus, from the Latin word meaning a circle, is a circular open space at a street junction. It now links directly to the theatres on Shaftesbury Avenue as well as the Haymarket, Coventry Street (onwards to Leicester Square) and Glasshouse Street. The Circus is close to major shopping and entertainment areas in a central location at the heart of the West End.

Pinewood Studios is a major British film studio situated in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire. Approximately 20 miles west of Central London on what was the estate of Heatherden Hall, the studios were created in 1934 by Charles Boot and built within 12 months by the Henry Boot Company of Sheffield. Boot drew his inspiration from the latest Hollywood movie studios. J. Arthur Rank later took control of both Pinewood and Denham Film Studios, which were often used by producer Alexander Korda.

he Ealing Comedies were a series of film comedies produced by Ealing Studios during the period 1947 to 1957. Hue and Cry in 1947 is generally considered to be the first of the "Ealing Comedies", and Barnacle Bill the last in 1957. However, the "classic" period is generally considered to start with Hue and Cry in 1947 and end with The Ladykillers in 1955.

The London Film Festival is a largest public film event that takes place in London. The Festival presents selected new films from the full spectrum of world cinema, with an extensive schedule of industry and public forums, education events, lectures and celebrity interviews.

The Central School of Speech and Drama (CSSD) was founded in 1906 by Elsie Fogerty to offer a new form of training in speech and drama for young actors and other students.

The London IMAX has been a IMAX cinema in the South Bank district of London, England, just north of Waterloo Station. It is operated by the British Film Institute. The cinema is located in the centre of a roundabout on Waterloo Road. Stamford Street is to the north-east, York Road is to the south-west and Waterloo Bridge is to the north-west.

The Apollo Victoria Theatre, is a West End theatre, on Wilton Road near Victoria station in the City of Westminster. Opened as a cinema and variety theatre, the Apollo Victoria became a venue for musical theatre, beginning with The Sound of Music in 1981, and including the long-running Starlight Express, from 1984 to 2002. The theatre is now the home of the musical Wicked.

The Phoenix Cinema is an independent cinema in East Finchley, London, which was opened in 1910 as the 'East Finchley Picturedrome'. It is probably the oldest continuously-running cinema in the UK, and shows mainly arthouse films.

BFI Southbank (formerly known as the National Film Theatre) is the leading repertory cinema in the UK specialising in seasons of classic, independent and non-English language films and is operated by the British Film Institute.

The Odeon Leicester Square is a cinema which occupies the centre of the eastern side of Leicester Square, London, dominating the Square with its huge black polished granite facade and 120 feet (37 m) high tower displaying its name. Blue neon outlines the exterior of the building at night, making a dramatic presence on the West End. It was built to be the flagship of Oscar Deutsch's Odeon Cinema Circuit.

The Everyman, in Hampstead, London, England was first opened as a cinema on 26 December 1933. The building was first opened as the Hampstead Drill Hall and Assembly Rooms in the 1880s. Later it was transformed into a theatre, the Everyman Theatre, which opened in 1920 and passed through many changes of fortune. Some of the greatest of modern plays were performed on its stage and many actors now famous made their bow at the Everyman Theatre. Noel Coward's The Vortex was first performed there.

London has been used both as a filming location and as a film setting more times than almost any other city in the world, at least outside of the USA. These have ranged from historical recreations of the Victorian London of Charles Dickens and Sherlock Holmes, to the romantic comedies of Bridget Jones's Diary and Notting Hill, by way of crime films, spy thrillers, science fiction and the "swinging London" films of the 1960s.

Because of the dominant role played by the city in the British media, the number of British films set in London is huge. It has also been used many times in American films, and often recreated on a Hollywood studio backlot.
