A cruise ship or cruise liner is a passenger ship used for pleasure voyages, where the voyage itself and the ship's amenities are part of the experience. Cruising has become a major part of the tourism industry.

Boats were almost exclusively used for work prior to the nineteenth century.

Cruising is done on both sail and power boats, although sail predominates over longer distances, as ocean going power boats are considerably more expensive to purchase and operate. In both cases however, the boats are still quite costly as the size required is usually up to 20 meters. Smaller boats have been used in around-the world trips, but is generally not recommended given the dangers involved. Many cruisers are long term and travel for many years, the most adventurous circling the globe over a period of three to ten years. Many others take a year or two off from work and school for short trips and the chance to experience the cruising lifestyle.

Cruising by boat is a lifestyle that involves living for extended time on a boat while traveling from place to place for pleasure. Cruising generally refers to trips of a few days or more, and can extend to round the world voyages.

Travel on cruise ships may be referred to as cruising. Those who take frequent cruise ship vacations may be called cruisers.

An ocean liner is the traditional form of passenger ship. Once such liners operated on scheduled line voyages to all inhabited parts of the world. With the advent of airliners transporting passengers and specialized cargo vessels hauling freight, line voyages have almost died out. But with their decline came an increase in sea trips for pleasure, and in the latter part of the 20th century ocean liners gave way to cruise ships as the predominant form of large passenger ship, with the main area of activity changing from the North Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea.

Traditionally, an ocean liner for the transoceanic trade will be built to a higher standard than a typical cruise ship, including stronger plating to withstand ocean voyages, most commonly crossing the North Atlantic.

Some may want to travel on a ocean liner to get to somewhere or to enjoy the voyage. Some may want to travel by luxury ocean liners. Some may want to travel by one of larger modern ocean liners. Some may prefer small ocean liners. Some may want to travel on ocean liners which have modern facilities, such as swimming pools, casinos, theaters, cinemas, and leisure canters.

An ocean liner is a ship designed to transport people from one seaport to another along regular long distance maritime routes according to a schedule. Liners may also carry cargo, and may sometimes be used for other purposes (eg for pleasure cruises or as troopships). Cargo vessels running to a schedule are sometimes referred to as liners. The category does not include ferries or other vessels engaged in short sea trading, nor dedicated cruise ships where the voyage itself, and not transportation, is the prime purpose of the trip. Nor does it include tramp steamers even if equipped to handle limited numbers of passengers, nor other cargo vessels (although many shipping companies refer to themselves as "lines" and their container ships, which often operate over set routes according to established schedules, as "liners"). Ocean liners typically were strongly built with high freeboards to withstand sea states and adverse conditions encountered in the open ocean, and had large capacities for fuel, victuals, and other stores which would be consumed on voyages which took from several days to several weeks.
