This is a page on what people thought about the splitting of Czechoslovakia.

Czechoslovakia split in 1992, this what a average British newspaper said,
It said that Slovakia was expected to be the poor relation.

Go on a Czech Holiday

Slovakia had a 1991 GDP per head of 5960 Unemployment of 10.3%, and population 5.3 million of which 85.6% Slovak, 10.8 % Hungarian, 1.1% Czech and 2.5% other.

The Czech Republic, was GDP per head 7200 dollars per head 2.5% unemployment gaining more from the free market than it's neighbour and population of 10.3 million. 95.1% Czech 2.9% Slovak, 2% other.

The deal on the army was 72000 solders became 48000 Czechs and 24000 Slovaks
Air force 44800 29867 Czech, and 14933 Slovak
Battle Tanks 3208 Czech 2139 and 1069 Slovak
Combat aircraft 399 266 Czech 133 Slovak

Many in Slovakia feared economic troubles, for over 12 months, as of old heavy industry that was being replaced, and explosive geographical problems,

Vladimir Meciar was seen as a risky authoritarian leader, of the Slovaks, it was feared he was scary against media opponents
Many feared ethnic conflicts over the dispute with Hungary over a dam on the Danube, and ethnic minority crisis, of Hungarians,
So Slovakia planned to start big exports of weapons, courting 3rd world, and more

But the Czechs were expected to do well financially under the more capitalist Klaus, who had called the Slovak nationalists bluff and chosen not more devolution but independence

It was called the Velvet divorce though as there were not massive ancient hatreds between the 2 nations, as the split was very peaceful,

Some feared that Slovakia, would get few allies, while the Czechs were close to Germany Italy Austria, and more, the Slovaks, were surrounded by nations who it was felt would need the landlocked land less,k at http://www.lonympics.co.uk
