Dalhousie is a beautiful hill station in Himachal Pradesh. Established in 1854 by the British Empire in India as a summer retreat for its troops and bureaucrats, the town was named after Lord Dalhousie who was the British Viceroy in India at that time.
It is built on and around five hills. Located on the western edge of the Dhauladhar mountain range of the Himalayas, it is surrounded by the beautiful scenery of snow-capped peaks. Dalhousie is situated at 6000-9000 feet above sea level. The best time to visit is in the summer, and the peak tourist season is from May to September. Scottish and Victorian architecture is prevalent in the bungalows and churches in the town.
Dalhousie is a gateway to the ancient Chamba Hill State, now Chamba District of the Himachel Pradesh, India. This hill region is a repository of ancient Hindu culture, art, temples, and handicrafts preserved under the longest running single dynasty since the mid 6th century. Chamba is the hub of this culture. Bharmour, the ancient capital of this kingdom, is home to Gaddi and Gujjar tribes and has 84 ancient temples from 7th-10th century AD.
Chamba is the northwestern district of
Himachal Pradesh, in India, with its headquarters in Chamba town. The towns of
Dalhousie and Khajjhiar are popular hill stations and vacation spots for the people
from the plains of northern India.
Chamba is one of the oldest Princely states in India, having been founded during the late 6th century. It is situated in the bosom of the Himalaya Mountains, and the boundaries are as follows: On the north-west and west, Jammu and Kashmir; on the north-east and east, Ladakh, Lahaul and Bara Bangahlaa; on the south-east and south, the districts of Kangra and Gurdaspur.
Himachal Pradesh was also known as Deva Bhoomi ( land of the gods). The Aryan influence in the region dates back to the period before the Rigveda. After the Anglo Gorkha war, the British colonial government came into power. It was initially in Punjab, except Siba State of Punjab Hills, under the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh till 1857. In 1950 Himachal was declared as a union territory but after State of Himachal Pradesh Act 1971 Himchal emerged as the 18th state of Indian Union.
Himachal Pradesh has one of the highest per capita incomes of any state in India. Due to the abundance of perennial rivers, Himachal also sells hydro electricity to other states such as Delhi, Punjab & Rajasthan. The economy of the state is highly dependent on three sources: hydroelectric power, tourism and agriculture.
James Andrew Broun-Ramsay, 1st Marquess of Dalhousie, KT, PC (1812 1860) was a British statesman, and a colonial administrator in India. Born in Dalhousie Castle, Scotland. Denounced on the eve of his death and to this day by some as having failed to notice the signs of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, and even having aggravated the crisis by his overbearing self-confidence, centralising activity, and reckless annexations. To his supporters he stands out in the clear light of history as the far-sighted Governor-General who consolidated British rule in India, laid the foundations of its later administration, and by his sound policy enabled his successors to stem the tide of rebellion. To his critics, he stands out as the destroyer of both the East India Company's financial and military position by his reckless policies. He laid the foundations of the Indian Mutiny and led the final transformation of money-making commercial operations in India into a money-losing colonial administration. Some argue that this was an improvement on the simply money making agenda, of the East India company, that often put money above Indian people, some would argue it lead to even greater tyranny, and cultural oppression. The Indian rebellions that many blame on him caused mass deaths, and a breakdown in racial relations between the British and Indians. The rebellions occurred a year after he had given up to the role of Governor General.
