Canada occupies a major northern portion of North America, sharing land
borders with the contiguous United States to the south and with the U.S. state
of Alaska to the northwest, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to
the Pacific Ocean in the west; to the north lies the Arctic Ocean. By total area
(including its waters), Canada is the second largest country in the worldafter
Russiaand largest on the continent. The most densely populated part of the
country is the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor along the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence
River in the southeast. To the north of this region is the broad Canadian Shield,
an area of rock scoured clean by the last ice age, thinly soiled, rich in minerals,
and dotted with lakes and rivers. Canada by far has more lakes than any other
country and has a large amount of the world's freshwater. In eastern Canada, most
people live in large urban centres on the flat Saint Lawrence Lowlands. The Saint
Lawrence River widens into the world's largest estuary before flowing into the
Gulf of Saint Lawrence. The gulf is bounded by Newfoundland to the north and the
Maritimes to the south. The Maritimes protrude eastward along the Appalachian
Mountain range from northern New England and the Gaspé Peninsula of Quebec.
New Brunswick and Nova Scotia are divided by the Bay of Fundy, which experiences
the world's largest tidal variations. Ontario and Hudson Bay dominate central
Canada. West of Ontario, the broad, flat Canadian Prairies spread toward the Rocky
Mountains, which separate them from British Columbia. In northwestern Canada,
the Mackenzie River flows from the Great Slave Lake to the Arctic Ocean. A tributary
of a tributary of the Mackenzie is the South Nahanni River, which is home to Virginia
Falls, a waterfall about twice as high as Niagara Falls.
Mount Robson, Canadian
Rockies in British Columbia.Northern Canadian vegetation tapers from coniferous
forests to tundra and finally to Arctic barrens in the far north. The northern
Canadian mainland is ringed with a vast archipelago containing some of the world's
largest islands.
Toronto is the largest city in Canada and the provincial capital of Ontario. It is located on the north-western shore of Lake Ontario. Toronto covers an area of 630 square kilometres (243 sq mi), with a maximum north-south distance of 21 kilometres and a maximum east-west distance of 43 km. It has a 46-kilometre long waterfront shoreline, on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. Its borders are formed by Lake Ontario to the south, Etobicoke Creek and Highway 427 to the west, Steeles Avenue to the north and the Rouge River to the east.
Toronto Pearson International Airport, also known as Lester B. Pearson International Airport or simply Toronto Pearson, is a major international airport serving Toronto, Ontario, Canada, situated 27 km northwest of Downtown Toronto in the city of Mississauga. It is the busiest airport in Canada.
The island of Ireland is occupied by two political entities:
Ireland (also sometimes
'Republic of Ireland', for disambiguation purposes), a sovereign country, covers
five-sixths of the island. Its capital is Dublin.
Northern Ireland, part of
the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, covers the remaining
sixth. Its capital is Belfast.
The geography of Ireland describes an island in northwest Europe in the north Atlantic Ocean. The main geographical features of Ireland include low central plains surrounded by a ring of coastal mountains. The highest peak is Carrauntoohil (Irish: Corrán Tuathail), which is 1,041 metres above sea level. The western coastline is rugged, with many islands, peninsulas, headlands and bays. The island is bisected by the River Shannon, which at 259 km with a 113 km estuary is the longest river in Ireland and flows south from County Cavan in Ulster to meet the Atlantic just south of Limerick. There are a number of sizeable lakes along Ireland's rivers, with Lough Neagh being the largest.
Politically, the island consists of the state, Ireland, with jurisdiction
over about five sixths of the island; and Northern Ireland, a constituent country
of the United Kingdom, with jurisdiction over the remaining sixth.
Dublin Airport
or Aerfort Bhaile Átha Cliath in Irish. Located in Collinstown, in the
Fingal part of County Dublin, it is by far the busiest airport in Ireland. The
airport is located approximately 10 kilometres north of Dublin City in a once
rural area near Swords, and is served by buses and taxis. An underground railway
line called 'Metro North' which will connect the airport to Swords and Dublin
city centre has been approved and is in development (see below).
Belfast International Airport is an airport located 11.5 NM (21.3 km; 13.2 mi) northwest of Belfast in Northern Ireland. It is also known as Aldergrove, after the village of that name lying immediately to the west of the airport. Belfast International shares its runways with the Royal Air Force base RAF Aldergrove, which otherwise has its own facilities.
